Wonder if anyone can help with this one. It's very heavy and really catches the light well. It's marked to the base REG NO.786703. I've looked it up on the relevant website but this number seems to be missing. Judging by the number it's 1930s but I don't know the maker - Davidson?Sunburst to base.

Gill — The Glass Association blue book gives Hoskins Rose & Co., 23 Sept 1933. Hoskins Rose & Co. were probably either factors, arranging manufacturing deals for wholesalers or retailers, or catalogue dealers, again either wholesale or retail. So we will almost certainly never know the manufacturing glassworks, but it is more likely mainland European than British.
The whole shape and imitation cut decoration look very much inspired by Walsh's Koh-i-Noor and Kenilworth cut patterns. See particularly the Kenilworth biscuit barrel in Reynolds fig.101 (v).

Marcus - 5 St Andrew St., Holborn Cross, London, where they had Offices and Showrooms for Glassware. They were undoubtedly agents, wholesalers etc. Possibly handled the usual suspects (Czech, German etc).

Marcus — No, the blue book does not give addresses. Sometimes, with registrations closer to 1908, you can find earlier registrations in Thompson with an address, but this is usually fruitless so much later. And thanks, you've reminded me to ask Roger whether Jim Edgley's original research notes have been deposited with Broadfield House, as these could include the addresses.
London head office addresses don't tell you much. Sheffield addresses are much more interesting as they almost always indicate that you are looking at a metalbasher.

Thanks. I was just wondering if Hoskin, Rose and Co, later became Jaffe, Rose and Co. I never received a response to enquiries, from Leon Rose, and think he has been ill for some while.
The whole area of importers, is proving difficult to gain information.
Finding former staff, people who worked in the trade, Glassexport representatives, little has come from two years of research and making contacts.
Sadly, I have a feeling that the history of glass-imports to the UK, is going to remain a very difficult topic, with little in the way of contemporary documentary or oral history materials surviving.

Finally, with the help of Marcus' superb book and CD database we can pin these down as well.... :clap:
Gill's biscuit barrel is Libochovice pattern 1466, Czechoslovakia 1950s (and my vase is the same item but missing its lid!)
My smaller pot is Libochovice pattern 1459, Czechoslovakia 1950s.
