Title: What is the name for this glass please..easy one....?
Post by: selina on July 27, 2007, 09:05:48 AM
Hiya,

I got this canister / jar today. Put it under my little UV torch and it glows :)

It measures 11.5 inches high to the top of the lid and 6 inches across.

Now what is the glass called? Uranium? Vaseline? Its more pale yellow white..but glows green. And there seems to be the same description for all different types of glasses on eBay. Opalescent..you name it. Just looking for expert knowledge  :D

No not an easy one!  ;D It's uranium glass definitely but it depends where you are as to what else it is called. I would go for the uranium custard glass. Here's an article by Mr Vaseline Glass www.go-star.com/antiquing/vaseline_glass.htm (http://www.go-star.com/antiquing/vaseline_glass.htm) and here is his website www.vaselineglass.org/ (http://www.vaselineglass.org/)

If you are going to sell it, make sure you include uranium in your title and use both pictures. I cheat to save money by sticking two pics into one jpg in Photoshop. Collectors will almost certainly look under uranium amongst their keywords

Thanks Christine..I'll go have a look :)

I think it may be an apothecary jar..its huge and similar style to some on ebay. It was sitting with some labelled old pharmacy jars.

Its a keeper..I have hardly anything in my 'glowy' collection. Thats if it will fit on the shelf!!

;D Trudy, accept it, you're hooked - in another 6 months time your shelves will be groaning under the weight of stuff you simply had to have!

BTW, I'd call it simply a lidded jar - the apothecary jars that I used to see in the old-fashioned chemists were more curvy and waisted (please anyone correct me if I'm wrong).

That was the top apothecary shelf Pip, the lower shelves contained increasingly practical shaped jars for frequent use.

Glad you said that Frank..I was wondering what the heckle else you could use that size jar for in the home?
I took a pic with my daughter to show the size of it.....

As far as the color goes (IF you are looking for descriptive terms to use in a SELL line on eBay),
I would go with
HUGE YELLOW OPALINE TRANSLUCENT URANIUM APOTHECARY VASELINE JAR
and list it in the vaseline glass and medical supply sections.

If it is a family piece, you just have to keep it!  A lot of this color came out of France from Vallerysthal and Portieux.  The French call it OURALINE is the most common word I have found on French eBay.  I am not sure exactly where your piece came from, but it is too translucent (in my humble opinion) to call it custard glass.  Custard glass collectors would consider it not opaque enough (and they are more into pattern glass than blown mold items).

As far as what you can use it for?  Easy!  It is an apothecary jar (the BIG size!), so put cotton balls in it!  This one could hold the entire bag!

I have a tall bathroom bottle with stopper in almost this color and the stopper is solid.  The stopper is bigger than a golf ball!

Thank you Dave ! That was interesting info :)

I dont think I'll sell it. Its a different piece for my very slowly growing 'glowy' collection. Its not a family piece by any means. I bought it on Friday..for the massive sum of $20Au. One of my best bargains by far I think.

Btw..the kids think its more suited to being a lolly / sweets jar...LOL
