Title: Wiedmann(?) vase and bowl. New info suggests Polish?
Post by: rocco on September 01, 2012, 10:52:02 AM
Found this set of vase and bowl, and (apart from showing) wanted to ask if there is more information available in the meantime.
Dirk? ;D

In this >> Link (http://shop.strato.de/epages/61231908.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61231908/Products/277) they cite a Wiedmann exhibition catalogue, but funnily no maker is mentioned.
Both pieces are beautifully finished with flat highly polished bases and rim (vase), the vase has remains of a sticker (might be a label, or just a prize tag?); I attach a pic, maybe it can help in attribution?

Thanks for looking,
Michael

Lovely find, Michael! Iīd be greenest green if I hadnīt both of them already ...  ;D
Especially the 3d-effect of this decor is quite stunning, innit?
Unfortunately I donīt have the Wiedmann exhibition catalogue mentioned - itīs
on my wishlist for years now, but there doesnīt seem to be any copy available.
This decor however is quite close to the Fumaris range apart from the fact that
these additionally have a silver-nitrate decor to the outer surface.
Iīd say there is a very high likeliness this also is a Wiedmann decor.

I know ;D Guess in whose gallery I have admired these in the past. The thick clear casing really gives a nice effect...
BTW, I adore your new Gralglas pieces

>> Link to another one of the vases (http://www.lot-tissimo.com/de/i/5573773/glas-ziervase_karl_wiedmann_fuer_gral-glashuetten_duernau_um_1980_bluetenfoermiger_stand_gestreckt): they cite the same catalogue, and attribute the vase to Gralglas around 1980.
I had a look through the Gralglas CD-rom, and I could not find the shape of either the vase or the bowl; on the other hand they don't seem to be "Unikate", or else one of them should appear with a signature I guess.

Thanks!
Michael

I wouldnīt worry too much about not finding them in the book, Michael.
There are other Gralglas items you canīt find there either. Unfortunately
my CD is missing since my move... Wonder when and where it will
resurface...  ::)

I've recently come across some information which suggests the vase is not German.

A Polish collector of glass has told me that these vases were not, as is widely believed, produced by Gralglas, but by Huta Julia in Sklarska Poręba (Poland). He sent me a photo of his vase with an old Huta Julia label on it.  Though I haven't got his permission to show it here, I shared the photograph privately with Dirk and Michael (Rocco).

The man also told me he believes the designer is Aleksander Puchała, and that it's possible that Huta Julia and Gralglas cooperated on some designs.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the resources to prove or disprove the information but decided to post here after some gentle proding by a couple of gentlemen.  ;)

Thank you for posting the info on the board, Anik!
Very interesting - and would explain why never any of these turned up with a Gralglas label or a signature, and that there is no reference to be found in the book or in any of the catalogues on the CD...

I am curious if we find out more about the connection between the Polish glassworks and Gralglas in the future.

Itīs great this new information has popped up. Wish it would make us any wiser and answer more
questions than it raises. But then again - where would be the fun in that? Hope your new contact
will be able to contribute a little more to this.
Will you be able to persuade him a little more, Anik?  :)

Kevin, thank you for bumping (and moving) the thread.

Dirk, unfortunately, I've had no more contact with the man who offered the information.  All I've got is what I've mentioned earlier.   :(

I've just been forwarded some important information (or rather, an important photograph) regarding the vase and the 'pumpkin' bowl.  I am now confident that both are Polish, designed by Aleksander Puchała.  In the photograph (taken in the 1970s or early 1980s) you can see Aleksander Puchała and his wife at an exhibition of his designs.  At the very bottom center of the picture is the same vase and the pumpkin shown in this thread.

Unfortunately, I haven't got permission to share that photo here.

Seconded. Many thanks, Anik!
I also googled that guy and I think he really made some nice designs in glass, so I feel
itīs good to have some of his work in my collection.
Please also thank the other collector for sharing this information.  :)

As a result an older rule of thumb is back now. Gralglas clear glass always glows orange
under UV. (These were the exceptions until now ;) )

And thank you m, Michael and Dirk for commenting. :)
