Can anyone identify this green pressed glass trinket set http://www.glass.co.nz/vanrielbutterfliesasmall.jpg
It is not the well-known Sowerby butterfly set, it may be Bagley but I have not seen it in any Bagley documents.
Any hints, or even negative information, will be welcome (as in telling me what it definitely is not)!!
Thanks,
Angela

I've not seen one like this anywhere before Angela, and I do watch out for dressing table trays as they are one of my collection things.
Is the quality similar to the Sowerby one or not?
-
Hi Angela
I had and sold the same set in pink!
I didnt have an ID for it, but sold it pretty quickly after listing it.
Anne, it was nicely made but IMHO nowhere near the quality of Sowerby.
-
Thanks Cheri, that's what I thought from the photo but you cannot always tell for sure just from pictures. :)
-
first idea was the Reich butterfly pattern but of course it did not match :(
really sad Angela, not being able to give some***** back of what all this here belongs
-
Any ideas yet, I wonder, since the quality isn't there, that it may be Chinese?
I have a 'pottery' trinket in the shape of a butterfly and It looks to be Oriental.
I'm wondering if it's mainly the Oriental who make these butterfly shaped trinkets, or do other countries make them too?
Long shot, yep. ;D
-
Hi Tigerchips,
Thats an interesting idea. Can anyone confirm that the Chinese made dressing table sets? I'm not aware of any Chinese designed dressing table sets.
I can't answer the questions about quality because these are in the UK. I'll have a look when I'm over there.
All the very best
Angela

Angela, I've just found a pair of candlesticks which could be a match for your butterfly box... no indication of maker on them anywhere though. Quality isn't brilliant, and there's a feint yellow tinge to the glass.
-
Hi Anne,
That does look like a match. Your picture shows up pretty much yellow on my screen - is it actually clear?
I haven't found out any more about it meantime. 'twould be good to know more.
-
It is clear with that yellow tinge you sometimes see in glass - I took the pic in a hurry last night using manila book mailers as a background! I'll try and get some clearer ones done when I can make some space to do them.
-
Had a mooch around the net and cannot find anything that resemble these. I do remember acquiring a pair of these many moons ago, but I can hardly remember what I did yesterday let alone many moons ago. Any ideas? Swinging towards Czech

We believe these to be Bagley pattern 3003. I have a pair of them, and Angela Bowey and I compared them with the Bagley butterfly pieces in the Pontefract Museum collection, as shown here:
http://www.wakefieldmuseumcollections.org.uk/index.asp?page=item&filename=bagley.mdf&itemId=WAKGMP%20:%20P2005.492 (http://www.wakefieldmuseumcollections.org.uk/index.asp?page=item&filename=bagley.mdf&itemId=WAKGMP%20:%20P2005.492) and they seem to be a match pattern-wise.
They are not shown in the Bagley Glass book by Angela Bowey and Derek and Betty Parsons but there's an earlier topic about them here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3980.0.html

thanks again Anne, clicked on that link and I have had the trinkets in the past which I sold, told ya about my brain retaining information, I shall blame it on my underactive thyroid.......... or senility..........one of the two anyway lol. never thought it would be Bagley tho. xx
-
It surprised me too when I learned they were! :)
-
TC asked if we'd confirmation of this ID, and the answer is yes. It's in Angela Bowey's Bagley Glass (3rd edition, page 58) and was included after Angela attended an event with ex-Bagley workers where she discussed it with them, and where several workers confirmed it as being made by Bagley, probably carrying the no. 3003, to match the Bagley butterfly lamp. Pontefract Museum have had a set listed as Bagley for a while, which is what prompted the discussion.
-
Thanks Anne, good to know.
I was a bit off with the China theory then. :pb:
-
Here's an amber tray in the same pattern.
P.S., great to have a dedicated 'trinket sets' section.
-
Thanks Fred, is that the big tray or the small pintray?
Thank you also for all your wonderful pics that keep arriving. I'm slowly working my way through them to see what we have and what helps ID other pieces, but my time is limited due to work commitments atm.
-
Sorry, Anne, forgot to put the size on the post.
It's the large tray (13 x 10 inches).
-
Thanks Fred, that's useful to know. I have the candlesticks to match this (in clear) but haven't seen any more of it anywhere yet.
-
Anne, for the record, I've seen it now in Blue, Frosted Blue, Green, Uranium, Pink, Amber and Clear.
-
Here are the lidded trinket pots (in amber glass) in two sizes from the Bagley 3003 butterfly set.
The smaller pots measure 4 inches x 3 inches x 2 inches high.
The large pot measures 6 inches x 4.5 inches x 2.25 inches high.

Oh yum! Thanks Fred... I keep searching for these on my travels but have never seen any for sale locally other than the 2 candleholders I picked up a while back. I suspect it was Bagley's answer to the popular Sowerby butterfly set!
-
Is there any evidence for the existence of a matching ringholder? I'll certainly post images if I ever see one.
By the way, the owner of the lidded pots was delighted that I was able to identify them for her, and more than pleased to be directed to the relevant section on www.glasstrinketsets.com to see more details about the set (especially the pic of the candlestick).
-
Not so that I know of, Fred. I've seen the big and little trays, pots and candlesholders online, but never a ringholder. In fact, I can't think of a ringholder with any Bagley set...
-
No ring holder, I've seen a 7 piece set with a pin dish.
-
I think pin dishes were the norm with most (not all) Bagley sets. :)
-
Part set in frosted pink.
