Title: Chance Pressed Glass- New Lotus Variant?
Post by: Ming on September 12, 2009, 02:06:29 PM
New Lotus Variant

l found a set of Pink Lotus pressed glasses consisted of 5 small dessert bowls and a unusual Fruit Bowl from a charity shop near Smethwick. First l thought the fruit bowl can not be Lotus as it has a flared and scalloped rim instead of round and straight. But after l compare with a clear Lotus fruit bowl (l also have one) that l found all the dimensions are the same except the rim part. All the rings and punch in the centre at the base are same.
The fact that dessert bowls came with the fruit bowl as set suggested it came from same owner. Therefore, the chance it is a Chance Lotus must be high.
Looking forward to all your comments.

What do you think David.

Ooohh that *is* unusual! David doesn't mention that shape in his book - I bet he'll be interested to see this Ming. :)

Okay, stupid question number 978, what makes these Lotus bowls as opposed to any other design made by Chance?

Chance's output is catalogued so we know what they did... Lotus is unlike any of their other patterns - see David's Chance Glass website for a brief overview (covered in depth in his book Chance Expressions.)

PS no such thing as a stupid question  :kissy:

Thanks Anne. I didn't see the design (dimples on the sides) on the bowls, so didn't realize they were the same that way. And you are so sweet about the dumb questions.  :kissy: right back at you!

No, I don't collect any one type of design or manufacturer. I collect "Scottish" stuff. First got onto the GMB when I thought I had purchased a piece of Monart which turned out to be Murano. Then I got sucked into the board and the rest is history.

Are there many what in Canada? Chances? Collectors of Chance glass? Pieces of Chance glass? I really have no idea as I am very much a rank beginner. Wish someone would come over to visit so we could shop together.

Hmm, this is a surprise! Lotus was never a great success in 1948, so conversely it should be collectable, but still doesn't attract much interest. This is probably because it is not a terribly inspirational pattern (designed by Robert Goodden of Spiderweb fame) and was probably attempting to popularise the modernist style.

But this bowl is quite strange. Because the making of moulds was a highly specialised task and something the company would not proceed with unless there was some assurance of success. So I wonder why we haven't seen more - could it be that perhaps we just didn't recognise it?

Great find if it is Chance, but I would love to examine it more carefully! :hiclp:

As usual, Ming, I would love to include a photo in Chance Additions... :)

BTW, my web site now has two freely downloadable PDFs - one is p.86/87 from Chance Expressions, the other is Errata & Updates for the same. Both are 300dpi print versions.

No problem. l  will send you some photos over the weekend.
By the way one thing l noticed with the Pink Fruit Bowl is the inside is more glossy than clear one. It give you the impression that higher quality glass was used or just better moulding.

Many thanks. In all probability the glossiness is due to better fire-polishing.
