Title: Riihimaki, Is This A Shape Of Theirs ?
Post by: sueglass on March 04, 2009, 11:18:17 PM
Hi all, bought this and am wondering if it might possibly be Riihimaki. The vase is water stained at the moment but will sort that out tomorrow. When I bought it I had a feeling it was but then it seemed too "plain". But having had a look around I have seen similar coloured but a lot dumpier. It is 9.75 inches in height and weighs 636 grams. Base has some wear. Sue

What's the top rim like Sue?  Flat or rounded will tell us some more...

It is flat Anne and not rough at all, you know when you pick up cheap glass and you feel around the rim you can always tell it is cheap. This isn't like that. I will do some better pics tomorrow, just put it on my bed tonight to photo the shape more than anything. Thanks for the reply, Sue

Shots of the base and the rim would definitely help.

Hi Pip, I think I saw the similar one on your website. Here are some more shots of it. Thanks, Sue.

I'd usually expect to see thinner glass and a fire-polished rim on plainer Riihimaki designs - so I'm not sure if this is/isn't.

I've got something in this pale blue and similarly plain, that is definitely Finnish, lurking in a box in the attic somewhere - I'll have to drag it out next time I'm up there and check the overall finish.

Nic, to be honest it was £1.50 so I would have been mad not to buy it and it is nice regardless of made it, but would be interested to find out. Sue.

I'm just wondering... would Caithness be a possibility? The vase is very similar in shape and finish to some of the late 1960s O'Broin pieces I've had in the past - but I'm not sure if they had anything like this colour in their palette.

Hi Nic, thanks for the replies, I suppose it is possible I have never really looked at Caithness. I have enough problems with buying the foreign glass I see, if I bought English as well I would be homeless !! either by being broke OR not being able to get in the house because it is full of glass. LOL.... One thing is the inner rim has a slight bevel but there isn't one on the outer rim if that can give any clues. Sue

Or because the folk north of the border set alight to it because you called them English.  :D Caithness is Scottish. Oops. ;D

The one on my site is a different shape - I think Nic's probably right with Caithness.

Pip LOL a slip of the keyboard there, what I meant was from the United Kingdom. Sue.

That rim and base would point me towards Caithness... check out this page for lots of Caithness colours and shapes: http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b178/pkay6/
