It has been a while since I last showed anything off so here is my latest addition, a small and early Fish vase from Mdina, 1969 I would guess. The combination of amethyst centre and blue wings works a treat.

and right to show it off, looks like the price of a small car the five together, very jealous and should be on my window sill.
-
Lovely!
The colours are particularly nice...
Michael
-
some cobalt swirls in those blue wings?

We are missing the :Mr. Green: emoticon.
A really lovely and fabby thing, John.
Glad it's in a home where it is properly appreciated, but just for this show-off thread on the really early experimental Fish vases, I just have to show off my Precious Baby Fish, along with my 2 other early ones.
Precious Baby Fish is only early one I have that is as good as your new beast.
-
Sue, I disagree :) your amethyst fish is glorious. Well they all are, as are John's.
m
-
;) It is, ;D but they're far more common than multicoloured early ones... 8)
-
or button rims :)
-
No cobalt in this one m, the darker bits are as a result of the silver chloride escaping, saying that the amethyst blown centre also looks quite close to cobalt under all that blue.
Bruce, I think the five are potentially worth more than my car, especially with the mileage I am racking up these days.
Common? ;D
-
It's a relative term, John. ;)
I'm sure there are at least 15-20 known of the amethyst ones, if not more. ;D
And yes, flying-free, button rims are very, very scarce on early-early Fishes. And on Crizzle stones. I don't have any. :'(
-
Do you mean you don't have an early button rim Crizzle?
me neither ;D
m
-
Five is just greedy. ;D
-
No, we are deprived, Flying-free.
I don't know if I consider 5 early early Fishies to be greedy, Nemmie - I know John works very, very hard indeed finding stuff, I think he deserves a bit of slack for making such finds, it's the justified reward for the effort.
(But I am madly jealous of this new Fish. In the nicest possible way I can manage.)
-
I was following Johns logic re: my two large Aurene globe vases which was why there was a smiley at the end.
Personally I don't find hunting down early Mdina or Isle of Wight to be hard work but if it is I also do a lot of it :)
-
;D Don't fret, Nemmie, I did notice your big grin!
I hardly see any common Mdina around here, far less anything early or unusual, and quite frankly, I've just about given up looking.
I'm not able to drive, so getting up regularly at 5 am to get to an auction or boot sale in atrocious weather doesn't feature in my life.
-
Five is just greedy. ;D
Definitely! I have no problem with the excess. ;D
It would be entirely different though if they belonged to someone else. :-X
-
Well done. They are lovely :)
-
Nemmi, can you PM me when you have time please?
-
A new addition brings a new colour variation and a whopper too :o
A real surprise finding this early shape so big, 23cm tall and 26 wide. Some of the later fish vases are just over 30 by 30, considerably bigger and a magnitude heavier again.
-
blue with cobalt?
m
-
Looks like all pale blue with silver chloride turning it dark green. The small one is amethyst bubble and pale blue wings the larger a blue bubble with blue wings.
A similar colour combination I think produced these two.
-
I think it looks as though it has cobalt swirls in it - if you look at the first photograph it's turqouise right around the base and sides right at the edge but then the cobalt can be seen in the turquoise. Mine is like this. But mine has no chlorides in. Will try and find pics in link
m
-
this is not the best picture but I do think the main body is made from turquoise with dark blue swirls which is how the body on my fish is made (not sure if cobalt and can't remember what conclusion I came to on mine as can't find my fish vase thread).
On this picture, the dark blue swirls in the fish don't look as purply as the cobalt side stripe.

I added to my last post while you were posting yours m. There are 'strands' of purple in the blue and around the shoulders distinct cobalt tones but I think they also silver chloride related. I have noticed purple tones inside both the the inside out vase and tricorn bottle in that photo too.
-
Nothing to add really. I'm just sighing in wonder. Lovely, lovely, lovely. ;D

WOW that vase is stunning..........
I missed it earlier.
Cheers,
Patrick.

Another group photo of the early form fish vases, the amethyst vase back right should not really be included in this group but it helps to add balance to the snap.

My hands are itching to get hold of the "small" one, second row back, left-hand side, again. I know it's not small. I know how good it feels.
That piece was the highlight of last November, for me. I liked the bigger one very much too, but that one has something extra special about it. 8) 8) 8)

That is the vase that started this thread (nearly four years ago now), I agree it is particularly fine example with a good combination of amethyst and blue glass, the addition of a little silver chloride spices it all up nicely.
-
It's the special tiny features, like the spots of the silver reactions suddenly disappearing under other bits of glass, that make it. All the different, three dimensional layers of different things happening, that all change when you turn it around.
I love it. ;D
-
Are they forsale yet John?, you have been hanging on to them for far too long. ;)
-
Don't hold your breath, Chris. ;D
-
They won't be for sale until one of the big Ds crop up for me, death or perhaps destitution. Anyway, the group is incomplete, there must be variations still to find...
-
Stunning collection there john, I must upload some pics of mine collection on here at some point in time, and I must thank you for my new fish vase which I purchased this week from you.
-
Thank you. I hope your new fish lives up to expectations, would love to see some photos of your collection, especially the early and small side stripes you mentioned the other day.
