I am starting to doubt my memory.
A customer has complained that her unlimited Colin Terris Caithness paperweight (Fountain) is not signed by him. I am sure he didn't sign unlimited weights, but did he ever sign limited ones? I have a Coral with CT/PH initials to the underside, but don't recall seeing a weight with his name in full?
thanks for any help,
-
In my experience, Colin Terris did not sign his weights in full systematically. It was quite the exception. You will find an example of such a Caithness weight (Chaman) in the photos album of another GMB member 'Caspurr' in the GMB thread reproduced below.

thank you Sophie, that was my thought. But you know what it is like, you start to doubt yourself after a while!

There is at least one set of exceptions. Many years ago Mr. Terris made a tour of retailers in the states and would sign weights sold during his visit. I brought in a couple of my older Caithness weights and he signed them as well.

Thanks Sach, I wonder if my customer might have seen those? She is in the UK & didn't seem particularly knowledgeable. I am just wondering why she expected it to be signed by Colin Terris if it wasn't stated as such?

there was one weight that had colin's full sig on, it was signed by 3 at caithness sure they were colin terris, peter holmes and william manson, i had one some time ago sure it was called jubilee crown 1977

I have about five Caithness paperweights where Colin's name is etched to the base - along with others such as William Manson!
It's not uncommon, but then my Caithness collection is very limited to lampwork pieces

Interesting.. I assume that these signed weights are all Ltd ed ones? Has anyone had a signed CT unlimited weight?
-
Lynne i dont think he would of signed any unlimited weights, it would of taken to much of his time to do so... some were made in the thousands

In my experience if you go to an event where any of the Caithness designers are present then they will sign any of their weights that you buy (or any that you already own if you take them along). As a result I've got a few weights signed by Colin, Helen MacDonald, Alastair MacIntosh and Sarah Paterson. They are all limited edition weights but I'm sure they would have signed an unlimited weight in the same circumstances.

Hi Ray, that was my thought, but my customer was adamant that for it to be a real CT weight he had to have signed it. I really did start to disbelieve myself.
thanks everyone, I can rest easy.
