Title: Large Scandinavian Suncatchers, help ID, please
Post by: Della on April 28, 2007, 07:28:13 PM

Hi All,  ;D

I have these two pewter coloured glass, figural suncatchers (really large, too) and I cannot seem to pin down who is responsible. The figures remind me of the Erik Hoglund, pieces that I have seen, but I can't find anything like them.

Any help most gratefully appreciated.

**bump**   :-[

I think that these are more likely to be wall plaques, considering their size, but I still can't find anything remotely similar, other than Höglund creations.

My first instinct is that they may be student pieces from an arts college / university. I could be completely off, though. They just remind me, in the manner of their execution, of pieces I've seen at end of year shows - things very decorative and expressive, but not too technically difficult.

I for one like them very much!

Thanks, Lynne  ;D

Hi Nic,
I just can't seem to catch the detail that is on them, as they just reflect the light. Maybe I should photograph them from the reverse side, which is heavily textured.
They are actually 10.5" square and incredibly heavy. The glass is actually smoke.
You could be right. I know very little about the curriculum that an art student follows (I was always terrible at art).

When I said not too technically difficult, I was refering to method of production - either cast, pressed or a high-temperature slump (I'm guessing that it is the latter) - rather than quality of detail. All that would be needed at it's most basic level is a cast plaster relief mould, a sheet of smokey glass and a small kiln. The detail would all be in the artistic skills of the person who created the relief mould.
