Title: art glass or trash tray? Murano good or not so good?
Post by: scavo on September 04, 2011, 01:14:34 PM
This ash tray seems to fall short for quality of swirling gold pattern on the high end Murano stuff (sorry don;t know correct term).

Base a little rough. From what I've read on other threads could suggest American?????

There is also a small bubble on inner surface of the bowl. All things together suggests pretty low quality item to me. An online purchase - none of the these mentioned in the blurb.

Comments? please ....

What do you mean by base a little rough? I would have said Murano. Quality is variable; Murano is not all high-end stuff.

The base isn't ground or polished. Rough- not polished or ground. Sorry, I really don't know the terms.

I would agree with Christine, looks to be Murano to me. From what i can see it does have a fair bit of wear to the base (I believe it is a polished base) which would suggest it has a bit of age not the it is badly finished or that its American.
Its probably from the 1960's, and personally I think it looks to have reasonable quality with the gold adventurine detail

Thanks for your thoughts ...
I'm pretty sure the base is not worn.
The finish is pitted and even has slight look like plaster of paris that has gone off in a bag.

Handmade glass is likely to have bubbles in it, so unless the seller is being really fastidious in their listing or if the bubble is burst at the surface then most sellers won't mention one little bubble.  Your piece looks reasonably good quality with the gold leaf in it and not low-end at all.   :)

hummmm, the bubble is right in the centre and very close to the surface.
I've left it too long to do anything about it now.
I need to have a go at photographing the base again in sunlight without flash so I can zoom right in. It isn't wear on the base it's a part of the production, 99.99% sure of that.

It could be a Murano second; the gold is rather blobby.

If this is Venini, then could mine be the same?

found something similar this week. An A+ bowl, sommerso, dark red, trilobe - absolutely Murano. Except the bottom was coursely grounded, unfinished and there was a large bubble insde the glass. So what happened, the glass blower made this piece discovered there was a serious quality flaw while making it, something that cannot be repaired. His options are, throw the thing back into the pot (not an option in sommerso) or quickly finish it off so as not to spend more time on it and limit the damage. The subsequent work of folding over the wings was done shoddily (to the purists I say sorry if this is not an adjective) - and the result is a second. Like this one, I suppose.
Title: Carlo Scarpa?

http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/4784902 this has bubbles clearly shown. "bollicine" = bubbles

Is it looking similar to Carlo Scarpa? Does anyone know the shape?

Yours has a common enough shape - found at the touristware end of Murano output, and made by several factories. I think Venini might be a bit of a stretch, however.

Looks like a nice piece with a bad finish. Could be a second and I agree on the base. It looks like they gave up. The gold foil is pretty haphazard as well but the colour of that green is gorgeous. A good useful piece.

Hi there:

The colors (etc) remind me of this item I had posted:  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,41895.0.html (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,41895.0.html)

It was thought to be Murano, but it is over in the Glass section yet (as I had trouble finding my own post) in order to compare with yours.....LOL.  Kinda reminds me of this.  So just my 2 cents worth.

Hmm. The colours don't look as strong.

Hmm. The colours don't look as strong.

I see what you mean but of course there has to be variables -- such as different lighting, different cameras, different times of the day, angles -- that might make a difference.  To me (taking that slight adjustment into account) the colors look much the same to me, IMHO.  You foil is more thicker, and not as sparse as mine -- but I imagine that with anything -- different amounts of gold foil was used in different amount for different items.  They are hand-made.

Your item just remind me of my item......the color and the gold in it.    ;)

Of course the shapes are totally different....lol
