Title: Bertil Vallien Bowl Kosta
Post by: adam20 on February 01, 2014, 03:11:30 PM
Here is a bowl - Bertil Vallien - signed Kosta Bertil Vallien with numbers - 9 inches diameter and really heavy - looked it up and can only see Brains series - this has a central devil with horns - any info appreciated

Perhaps the "Brains" series simply refers to all pieces which have the basic human head shape incorporated?

I've been madly lusting after a flying wedge "Brain" for years, so I've paid a bit of attention to anything "Brains" related, and this does appear to be the case.
I don't know for sure - it's just my observations.
You're a very lucky devil to have this.  ;)

Thanks - the photo does not show the 3D aspect of the head - it's quite good the way it has been made. It is really heavy, well over 2 kilos - the number is 945005

If it has a 3D aspect, it will definitely be part of the general "Brains" series.
It does start with just little heads - almost a "worry-stone" you could keep in your pocket, and goes up to large sculptures such as the Janus, which has different faces, and in the big flying wedges.
I'm sure I've even seen one inside one of his Boats.
(Another thing I lust after, hopelessly.  ::) )

I Don't think this is 'Brains' - It's design elements are identical to those found on 'Domino' - never seen a round one before though

Scandanavian glass isn't really my area, beyond a love of Vallien's work, Kisslikeether, but my observations have been that "Brains" does cover a lot of different styles, all with the head feature.

However, I know nothing about Domino - would that be the design of the rest of the bowl?

Could this be an unusual combination of the two?

I'm 100% confident this isn't Brains some of the Domino items have the incised face in the bottom.

Thanks for the info. :)
I shall keep quiet in future about names and ranges.  :-[
I prefer to just enjoy the glass anyway.

Hi

I obviously looked on the Kosta website and saw domino - they are square bowls half this size and the centres are not the same as this - this has a 3d head - mind you it is definitely discontinued and the moulded design to outer is similar to domino - can't find anything like this on google

I've emailed Kosta with photos

Thanks

Hi,

You might want to check if the numbers you give are correct.  Kosta Boda used a 5 number code ( from early 70's to about 2002), and then a seven number code, but not a 6 number code that I know of. The numbers are significant, as in the five number code the first number tells you the function of the piece (9 is miscellaneous; 4 is vase). In the five number system, the second and third numbers were the year of design, and in the 7 number system, the fourth and fifth number indicated year of design.

David

PS I just checked "The Kosta Boda Collection 1994" and the piece, as suggested by Kisslikeether, is very similar to Domino, which was first produced in 1994 although that particular design isn't included.  My guess is that it was added in the next few years.

Why not post a photo of the base so we all can see the writing?

It could also read 945005.

;) Except that kosta didn't use 6-figure numbers, (according to an earlier post).

Except there it is plain as day. Maybe someone should have told whoever engraved it we were expecting a five digit or seven digit code...

Adam described it as having the 6 numbers, exactly as you did.   :-*
It does appear to be an unusual beast, we're not even sure what range it is, if it is part of an official range, or an unusual combination of two ranges.  ???

Thanks everyone. Still searching for a match - no reply from Kosta yet.

The six numbers baffle me.  The image in the middle matches an image in the middle of a Domino piece in the book I mentioned.  The style fits in with Domino as well.  I would stick by my earlier guess that this a later addition to the line. It's a production piece, btw.

Adam, are you Adam p?
apologies for hijacking this thread but if so I've just posted on an old thread to ask if you can find some pictures to reinstate, that have disappeared from a link. They are of an art nouveau vase with applied pads and trails and with gilding on.
I've bumped it on the main glass board.
Many thanks and apologies if you are not Adam p :)
