For those who do not peek in the events forum and somehow missed the news. We have a two day stream of paperweight only lectures link to those (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?view=categoryevents&id=2%3Apaperweights&option=com_eventlist&Itemid=40) at the UKs largest ever glass conference. Covering the spectrum from Industrial to Fine Art and 400 years of glass-making.
If you miss the cut-off date, there will be a pay on the day option but you will get no tea or coffee in the breaks. One demo is already full (Mike Hunter paperweight making) and only a few places left for Alastair MacIntosh demonstrating:
The making of a paperweight using Venetian canework by the Vetro a Reticello method. If hot colour is available, a semi-overlay will be applied.
This weight is technically difficult and usually takes about 40 minutes to complete. If time is left I could demonstrate one or two simpler designs typical of a Caithness unlimited edition design.

Hi Frank. Shame there was not more advance warning / co-ordination of dates (I mean 18 months or so ago, not your recent post). The only two paperweight collectors clubs in the UK (the Paperweight Collectors Circle and the Northern Paperweight Society) have their first ever joint meeting on.....October 2nd. I guess that takes out 50 to 60 people who might otherwise have considered the paperweight (and other) events at Scotland's Glass. And on the wider scene, it is also Selman's special paperweight weekend in Chicago....

I second Alan's comment re advertising - this is the first I have heard of this and would have been interested in going. Unfortunately Oct 2nd - as well as being the Knowle event, is also Rugby League Grand Final day at Old Trafford (tickets booked earlier this week).
Is anything being done about recording (audio/visual/transcripts) for posterity and for access by those of us who cannot go?

Frank has been plugging the event for 18 months at least now. The related book was finished a year ago and publicised on the board...

Maybe that goes to show that, useful as this Board is, it does not reach as wide an audience as we might sometimes think. Most of the iceberg is underwater....

Both Paperweight Collectors Circle and the Northern Paperweight Society were aware of this a long time ago NPS had said they were going to send up a coach load, but we never heard from them again. As I am not a member of those I was not aware how it was mentioned, or not, in their newsletters. Why they set-up events at the same time is beyond me, but that's life. It has also appeared in a lot of press, admittedly some of that press was not the most helpful, over the last year and more and it was mailed to over 1,000 people. GA carried it in Glass Cone for several issues but only got the application form out this month!
Thursday is last chance to book a place... it does have some remarkable paperweight lectures! Still a few spaces left for the Alastair Macintosh paperweight demo of the the Vetro a Reticello method.
We have delegates coming from around the world so it must have reached some ears. Sorry for all those that missed it.

I am a NPS member although I do not go to all the functions. I do not recall anything having been promoted through them and I shall have words to see why not. Unfortunately I tend to limit my regular browsing of the the web sites to the two glass message boards and usually only to the paperweight threads - I might follow relevant links through to Scotlands glass etc from there but otherwise I would't go browsing through these sites so putting information in tehe events thread passed me by!.

Yes, it is a dilemma, but with only two of us to organise the whole shooting match getting the speakers and venue and everything - We had to rely on a thousand strong mailing list and all the 40 glass societies we sent the press releases, to pass the information on to their membership.

I guess as Kev is not talking this time round it is not quite as exciting ^-^
But we do have Derek Carter (Paperweight Circle) Andy Nowson (New Caithness book coming - been proof reading) Helen MacDonald - One of the best, Dave Moir - a great story teller. Mike Hunter and the remarkable glass and weight maker Alastair Macintosh.

I am sure that Derek's and Dave's (and the other's, too) talks will be just as fascinating as my "cane archeology" and their talks may well be easier to follow than my detailed meanderings. Regretfully, I will not be there this time, even as a visitor.
