Title: Australian Carnival Glass by Crown Crystal
Post by: Glen on September 18, 2006, 11:10:55 AM
We've talked about the beautiful Carnival made by Australia's Crown Crystal on several occasions. If you'd like to look at some of their glass, here's an article.

GREAT article, Glen :!:

I didn't realise how small some of the pieces are, until I saw the photo of the Kiwi nappy being held in the hand.

My favourite is the Swan.  :D

Wow, an entire range of glass to discover. The world of glass truly is amazing.

Many thanks, Della and wrightoutlook (what's your name?  :D )

Della - the Kiwi nappy (individual berry bowl) is 5" across the top. I think that the foreshortening effect of the angle at which I took the pic has made my hand look a bit out of proportion. But the little nappies are quite delicate and lovely, alongside the chunkier and heavier master bowls.

The biggest of all is the Kookaburra Float bowl. That's going on 11" across the top. There are also some very impressive comports that are large and very showy.

Thanks again, both of you, for taking the time to look at the article. I appreciate it.

Thank you Glen, this is wonderful and extremely interesting. I love the birds on these pieces, and the swan is superb. I do agree entirely with WO that the world of glass is truly amazing, especially when we have you Glen to keep bringing us new articles to expand our glass horizons even more. Thank you!

Thanks Glen,
it's great to see Australian glass out there for a whole world of glassies to see!
I'm not even a carnival collector, but I really appreciated your article.
 :)
I have one Aussie carnival piece, a lovely dark comport. It is quite simple but elegant.
Crown Crystal also made lots of other types of glass, including the very sought-after citron (vaseline).

Hi Glen,

Just wanted to compliment your ***stunning*** drawings, which are definitely the best renditions of Australian carnival that I've ever seen. Absolutely beautiful.

On another topic (I don't want to draw attention to it, and will delete shortly so that it's not in your thread). I don't usually talk about open auctions, but given this is one of the family of suspect sellers, just wondered what this was: 180029864186.

Anne, Marinka, Julie, Cathy - thank you so much for your comments. I really appreciate them.

Cathy - the little compote on eBay is Imperial's "Propeller". It's OK  :)

Thanks Glen, I'd just gone through all the plain looking names on David Doty's site and couldn't pick the one-there are just sooo many patterns....

I've added some stunning photos, courtesy of my friend, Ray Rogers (in Oz). They are of Australian flora and fauna - and I find them of especial interest as you can compare the real article to the moulded design on the glass.

Here for the flowers:

Nice article Glen!  I like the dark a lot - I always find I gravitate to the darker pieces for preference.  These look very shiny and glitzy, or is that just the pictures?

Is there much Oz stuff around in the UK?

Lovely photos, Glen.

I clicked the on kookaburra photo for my surprise, like it tells you to, and there is not link from it. The other links are working fine though.

DOH! (Slaps head รก la Homer Simpson)

Well Della, I suppose I did manage to deliver a sort-of surprise!   Thanks very much for pointing it out to me. I made the caption link to the pic instead of the photo. What a plonker. I've corrected it. Again, thank you.

Lynne - the iridescence on almost all our Aussie Carnival is top notch. Packed with colour and iridescence. It isn't easy to find in the UK. We've acquired only two items here in the past 20 years. One was the marigold Kookaburra float bowl (a rare piece) which was found in the West Country. The other was a pair of Emu nappies (also rare) found in a house clearance in London.

Most of our other Aussie Carnival was purchased at US Conventions or privately (not from the UK).

Anne - perfect! You've given me the giggles too now. And there's a cartoon in it - but I haven't got the time at the moment, so this one will have to suffice for now.

Do you know where did the name "nappies" for small bowls came from, Glen? I thought it must have been a US term, and was amazed to find them in the 30s catalogues because we use 'nappies' as in the UK (and we never say 'diapers') :)  My grandmother calls the smaller bowls in the salad sets 'sweets bowls', so I don't think 'nappy' ever made it into the general parlance, for the obvious reasons.  :D I've got so used to it now I don't do the double-take!
