Title: Strathearn miniature
Post by: Lustrousstone on October 29, 2011, 04:54:03 PM
Is it unusual to have a Strathearn miniature with a ground and polished base please? 13/8-in diameter and ever-so handily labelled.

Hi. Unusual, but not unknown. Strathearn ground the bases if the weights were too uneven to be sold as made. I think maybe 2% - 5% of Strathearn weights have had the bases treated in some way other than the usual 'fire polished'. I have had ones that are polished flat, and also part polished to give a flat ring.

Also ... weights intended as decoration for doorknobs were smooth ground to the base so that the shank could be firmly glued on to the base. But the doorknobs I have seen have been over 2 inch diameter.
