Title: St Louis Scramble with silhouette canes

picked up this St Louis scramble with a giraffe and dog silhouette canes for bargain price of 6GBPs at a boot sale in the Scottish glens of all places , was wondering if the giraffe cane was an uncommon one as can only find one other with this cane that sold at auction around 11 years ago

I know very little about St Louis silhouette canes. But I think the giraffe is a horse.

The neck is rather long but rest of it is much more horse-like than giraffe.

Hmmm, The Christie's image does seem to show the same creature.

We need somebody with more knowledge than me on the St Louis silhouette canes.

I think the key thing with these silhouettes is to remember that the original cane would have been circular, not oval or whatever distorted shape it ends up as in the paperweight.  If you use photoshop (or your imagination) to make the 'giraffe' cane circular, it turns into a rather poor horse.

yeah I already thought of that Alan but their horse cane that I have seen is still different , pic of cane enclosed

Hi Gary.  If you check out John Hawley's book 'The Glass Menagerie' he shows two Saint-Louis horse canes on page 24.  One is the fat one you show, the other the thin one in your scramble.

ah that's brilliant Alan at least I know now as I couldn't find anything on their animal canes except for the one in the christies auction link which they listed as a giraffe , easy mistake as it looks more like one than a horse lol, plus I collect and come across mostly Scottish weights this is my first French weight so I have to learn more about these now , thanks again
