Title: Deep tray with bird pattern? - ID = Tiara Empress Bird of Paradise Dresser Tray
Post by: Anne on December 09, 2008, 06:31:26 PM
I just spotted this whilst looking for trinket sets pieces, but it doesn't look like anything I can find in Bagley Glass (Bowey, Parsons and Parsons), does anyone recognise it please? (It looks too deep for a trinket set tray as the seller says, but what else might it be for? My dearly beloved said it looks like a serving dish - pheasant pie was mentioned - but I think he's just hungry and hopeful!!!  ;D)  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280291148563

It's a serving dish with handles and feet, seems a little exotic for English. Australian

whom of you is going for it?
I won't because it is definitely not German, I think
but you should rescue it for further investigations, because it is pressed, please

I didn't as I went out to a meeting after I posted earlier, and have only just returned home, and the auction's ended. I'm intrigued to know who this was made by though. If Australian perhaps Cathy B will know it?

It is gorgeous, Cathy. Thanks for ruling out Australia, what else might it be I wonder?

That's so pretty!  I love the bird of paradise - made me think Australia, too!

Can't be for any type of pie. How on earth would you make the pastry shape properly?

I doubt it'd be oven-proof either somehow, Carolyn. Perhaps more a server for cold foods/salad etc...?

Or a tray for a pitcher and tumblers?  Wouldn't it be nice to have a matching set?!

Your tray is from the Tiara party line of Indiana Glass (USA). They called it the Empress line from Tiara Exclusives circa 1984. Tiara was like Tupperware...they had parties for women only at Tiara parties glass was sold. Ken

Ken, thank you, that's really good to know. So it would be a serving dish for nibbles or salad or whatever then?  Nothing to do with a trinket set after all.

Anne it was called a Tiara Empress Bird of Paradise Dresser Tray. There was an optional Bird of Paradise Trinket or Powder Box available that sat on the tray. I'll post a link below that should take you to the 1984 catalog (just click on the 1984 on the list). Picture isn't great, but 1/2 way down the page you should see the Bird of Paradise items. Now Tiara didn't make the glass, they had it made for them primarily using molds designed by the Indiana Glass Company in the 1920's, but several companies made glass for them under contract including Indiana, Fenton, Dalzell-Viking, Bartlett Collins, Pilgrim & a couple of others.

Hope this helps. Ken

Ooooh yes indeed, thank you Ken, really useful info. May I quote you and the source for the Glass Trinket Sets site please? I've very little about American trinket sets as yet. (Link to Trinket set site in sig block below.)
