Title: Tragedy :-( I now have a pair of bookends instead of a bowl but would still like

 ....an ID if possible just for future reference  :'(

and at least seeing it in cross section I note the tortoiseshell effect is only on the surface layer of glass.

3 inches high x 9 inches wide weighs (or did weigh) 3.5kgs

spitting feathers at the moment grr

uuuh sorry to hear that Mel.  That was a pretty big bowl  :o  and rather beautiful.
Sorry can't help with id but will have a look around and see if I can find anything.

I've only found references to tortoiseshell glass from an Empoli company but this is not quite the same as that type of glass imho

Mel I'm sure this isn't the same  :'( but there are similarities...however it is signed and has a label so maybe not the same as yours?  it's a smaller size but...

for goodness sake, it could only happen to me. I knew it was a goodun, look even the tortoisehell pattern is only on the surface like mine

Mel they do look remarkably similar but they don't show a base shot on that auction and I wonder if that one might have had a flat polished base rather than a polished pontil mark?  Just trying to find a get out clause here  :)

Patterns (and colour) are often on the surface or just under. The colour is the expensive bit
