Title: Big bell,uranium handle...
Post by: keith on August 11, 2012, 12:56:56 AM
13 inches high,6 across the mouth of the bell, white rim, slight damage, bit clapped out? but a great colour,I suppose these were made by a number of factories ;D ;D

is the handle uranium glass?  I love it.  I can't think that 'lots' of people made them so beautifully with a trailed rim or lip wrap though.

I have to agree with m - there's something rather special about this beast!
The bell is an unusual shape - staight sides with a real "kick" to the flared lip and the wrap, the handle is very long - and elegant.
This is not in any way an "ordinary" or mass produced glass bell. I'd happily give it house-room!

Curious - is it very heavy?  I have what I thought was a decanter stopper here (came with some chandelier drops). It's the same design as the handle of the bell, but different curves shapes and the beehive at the top only has three things not 4 like yours. It's about 6 inches long, solid and incredibly heavy.   Just faintly musing whether it might be off a bell rather than a stopper - it's damaged at the bottom of what I thought was the stopper.

I've never seen one with a white rim. Nice one. Such bells are usually dear, even damaged.

Keith I found this - apparently sold as Nailsea glass  via Dreweatts
http://testing.dreweatts.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=95&Itemid=93&saleno=21872&tfaagcat=G
Not sure about the Nailsea attribution but to be fair I do live in the locality and I do have an old bell handle bought locally in a box of other bits and pieces.

It takes a little while to load and then you need to scroll down a bit and they are further down the page on the right hand side, very dark pics but if you click on them they open up...it's a test site for Dreweatts so a bit odd.

oh that's a shame. It opens for me...there are quite a few on that sale, to look at.
Never mind.  If I find another way of picturing them I'll add it.

Just looking through Miller's Glass Antique Checklist (consultant Mark West) edition produced in 2000 and on page 148 there are a large selection of bells under the heading 'Nailsea Glass' (mentions that 'Nailsea Glass has become a generic term for a wide range of decorative odds and ends made by glassworkers, for their own profit and sometimes for apprentice tests or guild processions, from the spare glass left in the vat at the end of the day.')
One of them is a similar colour to yours with what looks like a white trailed rim but it only has a clear handle - dated c.1850 price guide given as £200-500 then.  There are two others that have green handles out of the 15 shown in the pic.

Keith, I photographed this bell at the V&A last week.
Apparently made by Onslow Blackhall Sheridan at the Whitefriars glassworks c. 1879

It's not identical to yours but had a similar feel and perhaps gives a timeframe.

Your bell being two colour and uranium made me think Val St Lambert (probably jogged by Christine's bowl bizarrely)
and then I came across this:

Herbatte - height 25cm ruby bell with clear handle (wrythen at bottom of handle where it joins bell) and then has 4 knops at the top in ever decreasing size to smallest at the top (as does yours)

I think Herbatte was Val ST Lambert or is somehow linked?  I don't know anything much about either name.

Christine's bowl is here on this link for easy comparison - amazing when you copy and paste your bell and Christine's bowl and put them side by side :)

Yes, it got absorbed by VSL in 1879 but due to the crisis in 1929, it closed in 1935.
