Title: Scrambled Cane Paperweight, Appears to have a date cane
Post by: Catisfaction on February 02, 2012, 05:45:37 PM
I hadn't even thought to check the canes in this weight when I first acquired it a month or so ago, then I was perusing Scrambled Cane weights and saw one with a signature cane and thought ooh! I should check mine. Sure enough there appears to be a cane with a date but I just can't make out what it says :P It might be 1854, 1864, 1954 or 1964.... or something else but that's what my eyes keeps seeing each time I look at it.

I tried to get some close ups using the camera but the angle of the cane and the way the light bounces off the surface of the weight are making it difficult.

I was assuming the weight was Italian when I first purchased it but would love to hear opinions as I might be wrong :) My educated guesses aren't nearly as educated as some of yours. I'd love to hear opinion on age also as I'm aware the date cane may or may not give the actual date the weight was produced.

I can't post dimensions at the moment as I'm not at home and the weight is but I can add them later into the weekend if they are needed.

Hello, genuine fairly decent quality chinese scrambled. Possibly 1970s.  More info from someone else.   Regards Roger.

My attribution would be Chinese from the 1930s, not 1979s.   Regards.

I'm inclined to agree with 1930'ies - a very nice piece.

Just a small whinge for the future.  The second photo which is of the "date" cane has your watermark right over the top of the bit you wanted us to see.  I presume it is more or less automatically placed so if it is you will need to have the point of interest "off centre" in future.

Nice piece would be happy to have found it.

Ross

Thanks for the info everyone... for some reason I forget the Chinese were around before the 1970s lol!

Ross, sorry bout the water mark and thanks for the heads up. I keep doing that with signatures etc as well. I need to remember to off center them!

I agree with Allan : 1930's Chinese. And the "date" is nothing more than a misshaped cane creating an optical illusion. Chinese date plaques are quite large and obvious, and there are only four known dates (and not one of the ones you mention is one of the known dates).

Here is a 1930s Chinese weight with an 1895 date:

You can see what Andy means by large plaques.

Thanks Andy and Allen. Education at it's best! I really appreciate it.
