I couldn't find very much on dragonfly weights at all apart from one dated 1978 and thought I'd put this on here. It's very pretty - the wings are green aventurine, the body purple outlined in black, red head and black eyes.All the dark green splotches on the ground of the weight are also green aventurine. Has a PH sig cane in it and signed on the bottom Selkirk Glass Scotland Dragonfly 1981 - measures 2 1/2" wide by 2 3/8" high. Seems to be from the Summer Magic series I thought? is it called lampwork? I love the 'drawn' qualities in it as though someone has outlined the dragonfly and coloured it in as well as the 'flowers' on the background of the weight. There are 5 different millefiori flowers in it.

Yes, it is a Selkirk weight from the summer magic series: there are all unlimited edition and there is also a weight with a butterfly and another with two lovebirds. It is a lovely Peter Holmes' weight. I think that there are two types of background for this series: a green one and a yellow one. You seem to own one of the yellow ones. It is indeed lampwork but you are right it is just below the surface of the weight with only a thin layer of clear glass over it; it does look as if it had been drawn.

Thanks Sophie. I've seen the butterfly version but I prefer the detail of the dragonfly and also the love birds, which are beautiful. I managed to find one green background dragonfly but it was a lot darker than this one - I can't find the link now unfortunately ::)
looking into it, it looks as though you are looking up amongst trees to the underside of the dragonfly with the sun behind it in the sky. It's very painterly with gorgeous colours and mottles through the glass.

Should add, lovebirds is 1979, the other 2 are much later at 1991 and 1994.

ooh lovely. I do like both those butterflies. It's amazing how the colours of butterflies change the way the eye 'sees' the weight- i.e. to me I am now looking down on the top of the butterflies settling in a flower bed rather than as the dragonfly seeming to look up at it through trees.
I love these weights. I think they photograph particularly poorly - it is one of those pieces that, when you actually have it to look at, is far more stunning than conveyed on screen.

Yes - that would be nice, to show how different individual weights can be, despite nominally being the same design.
Just one question: your weight is signed 1981 - correct - but you have seen one signed 1978? I am asking as in the 1978 catalogue only Butterfly and Love Birds show up. Dragonfly first shows up in 1980. Attached scans of the catalogue images.

Indeed, apart from the one in the catalogue, the one Pooleandpaperweights posted and mine, I've only been able to reference one other at all, which is strange given they were not limited edition.

Attached is an image of the 1978 Dragonfly (LE 250) - yes, I would love to get a better picture ::).

They made another Dragonfly as well. One on the right is 1979, same as the 1978 one above, edition of 250. One on the left is dated 1980 and is the only one Ive seen.....
