Title: Kosta Boda decanter - who?
Post by: Ivo on March 30, 2008, 02:52:20 PM
Smallish decanter with a striking stopper and a silver foil sticker on the neck that reads "Kosta Boda  -  Sweden  -  Full Lead Crystal".  There are no sigs or numbers on the bottom.
It looks to me as if it was made in the time when full lead crystal was still permitted in Sweden, so of older vintage.  I am thinking seventies.

Can anyone think of a designer and/or time frame?

Ivo:  The decanter is very like "Captain" by Monica Backstrom, which is in the 1986 Kosta Boda Book of Glass. The obvious difference is in the stopper, which in the picture is a large globe-like stopper. According to the book, KB was still making full lead crystal in 1986. I'm attaching a poor picture from the book FYI.

That is very interesting, I see the similarity in shape. But my decanter is smooth and the one in the picture seems to be done in half-post, i.e. thicker around the bottom part.  I'll go investigate, thank you!

Have just seen your decanter and I would have said that it was Erik Hoglund. It will have a smooth polished pontil underneath. Early Boda was just marked with a sticker which usually gets lost. It may be signed (if it is later model) in scratchy writing starting H  or Boda H number/& number. I think he was married to Monica Backstrom at one point - so perhaps they influenced each other!

That is not a EH piece that I have ever seen. And as far as I know that sticker first saw use in the 70's after that EH had quit.
It is possible that the stopper doesn't is the right one.

Full lead crystal is still used but with a new name, which I can't translate at the moment. "good for the Enviroment crystal"
