Title: Salviati Fish Sculpture
Post by: lenore on August 17, 2005, 10:04:39 PM
Hi, Just curious but we have the opportunity to look at a Salviati fish sculpture that has a good portion of the label on the base. It is like the one pictured here in Leslie Pina's 2nd edition Fifties Glass Book on page 89. Although I must say I can't remember if the color scheme was the same. Oh well, memory is definitely going. Anyway, in her book she shows a value of $2500-$3500!!! Is that for real or is that terrifically overstated in today's market. Just wondering. Thanks!

You should take ANYTHING in her books with a grain of salt. She uses pictures from auction catalogues and from collectors, along with their attributions and values, without doing any confirmation of her own.  Sometimes she prints known errors from second rate auction catalogues as gospel truth. She also prints their estimates as her "value", even if the item in question did not even make the reserve price.

Although they are OK for beginners because of the wide variety of glass they feature, her books are considered a joke amoung serious collectors.

Thanks for the reply!
Well, at least this piece does have a Salviati label so I don't need to rely on her attribution.
I have searched and searched the net to find a similar piece to get an idea as to the value but found absolutely nothing! And, I mean nothing so I don't have a clue as to how to place a value on it. Any thoughts?

Have spent countless hours scouring the net for any info on this Salviati fish which per Pena is by Loredano Rosin. Does that bit of info (Rosin) help with any more history on this piece? Thinking we may just pass on it.  Oh well. Thanks again,

Lenore, I've been looking at Loredano Rosin info online and some of his pieces do seem to go for a high price... one appraisal I read gave a figure of some $5000  for one of his works.

I suspect that part of the reason for its collectability may be the fact that he is no longer alive (he died as a result of a motor boat accident in the Venice lagoon in 1991) so there will be a finite number of pieces. The quality of the workmanship appears to be well-regarded from what I have read.

You might find this bio page about him interesting: and there's a recently completed auction page with one of his horse's heads here (including pics of the signature):

I'm sure some of the resident Venice and Murano experts would be able to add more so this maybe just a starter for you. :)

BTW I love the fish - it's soooo elegant!  8)

Hello Lenore,
Do you have an actual photo of the Fish you are talking about?

Thanks for the website! That one I didn't find. Definitely some good info there.
At the moment I do not own this piece and unfortunately would not be able to take a pic of it until we purchased it and it does represent a good investment. So, sort of waffling on it until I can get a better handle on its value. If Pena does collect info on values from auctions its better than having no info at all. At least I think! But, need to take a pic of our latest find a signed piece of Venini that is like a poker chip??!!
Thanks again and have a great weekend!

Hi Lenore,
Well, that is what I do sometimes when I am not sure about a piece. I will just buy it for a price I can live with, if it turns out not to be Murano, or not the maker I thought it was then I can scrap it. I have received some awful pieces in the past that I thought were Italian but because of bad photos I thought it was worth a chance. But then again, I have bought some exeptional pieces by just taking a gamble on them. I would say go for it, if you think its worth it in the end!

Well, we got him! The Salviati Loreando Rosin Fish Sculpture. Here is a pic of him and one of the Salviati label. Will enjoy him over the next week while he is being listed. Its a very, very heavy piece with lots of color in the fish body and wonderful concave eyes!
