Title: Butterfly lampwork
Post by: Derek on May 04, 2006, 09:11:53 PM
Hi all

Interesting little piece of lampworking which I thought Leni and Simone would enjoy - and probably anyone else who cares to look!

It was made by Rosette Fleming one of the Caithness designers. The wingspan is 1 1/2 inches.

A great idea mounting it in a small picture frame.

Hi Simone  Glad you liked it !

It actually came in a frame!

It was from Rosette was running a venture called Caledonian Creations from Balloch some time ago I believe.

I have just checked on Google for Caledonian creations and all I find is Sporran makers !!! which tends to suggest that these are no longer produced.

I too like the frame although the butterfly appears to have been glued to the background.

I have several bits of lampwork that I want to display so think I will use the same approach although using blue tac rather than the glue.

Just thought I would let you know that Rosette moved back down to the Perth area a few years ago.She has most recently been doing lampwork for John Deacons but has not been doing a lot for a year since she has had two babies in quick sucession.I was visiting her last weekend and she was telling me she was thinking of restarting making her pictures and trinket boxes again from home now that she has five kids to look after.I will let her know that one of her pictures has turned up on the message board.

Hi Allan

Thanks for the update on Rosette - The picture came to me thanks to Dave ! - he told me she had moved from Balloch and I guessed she was somewhere in the Perth area as her picture was in the Dec2004 PCC mag with John Deacons, Willie Manson  etc.

Good that Rosette thinking of starting making the lampwork pictures again - I for one will be looking out them !

Re the glue - I haven't tried it but I suspect the glue used for repairing bicycle inner tubes would work - a thin coating on each surface - allow to dry and then join !

Title: Lampwork Displays

Hi All,
I have been collecting lampwork and canes for years now and here is a picture of one of the five cases I made. I bought a cheap pine picture frame and made a frame fot it to sit on then fitted hinges so it could be hunf on a wall or just sit on a table. I filled the base with Blue Tac and puiched the canes in. What do you think of it ?

What a brilliant idea!  Simple, but effective!   :D  I have a wodge of white-tac left over from sticking down my pressed glass bowls which are on the window sill and which the cats walk (and sit) in     I'll definitely have a go and see what I can do with it!   :D

Hi SImone - I'm still cracking !!

Actually I have another four cases of canes, one has a lot of canes Whitefriars made but never used, another is full of canes from  the Asmerican artists and there are over 50 Perthshire picture canes in another. Wonder what the are worth ???

As a reference I'd say invaluable! Any chance of pics of your other trays please Dave?

Dave's canes are a true delight to see.

And we know of someone else who also has lots and lots and lots :!: :D

I only have two small plastic containers of canes covering a small selection Paul Ysart and Peter Holmes, plus a tiny packet of a few Strathearn (which came from Dave).

I need more
Title: Paperweight Canes

For all you cane lovers - some more pictures for you to see.
Note the Whitefriars canes and the two sheep. Geoffrey Baxter wanted to make Whilst Shepherds Watched as the 1980 Xmas weight adn they had mmade kings so shepherds were no problem but sheep were another matter. They made one sheep cane which looked like a poodle so they made a second with a white sheep on a black background and this was rejected so they made a third with a green background but Baxter didn't like this either but time had run out so they just made a pattern plate and did a millifiore bell for Xmas 1980
