My royal commemoratives theme display at our Jubilee weekend historical exhibition (includes a few non-glass pieces as well.) Everything else was non-glass other than my small collection! 8)

I "celebrated" the palaver by tracking down the Sex Pistols wonderful rendition of "that" anthem.... one of the only 2 versions I find acceptable and playing it very, very loudly.
I may get out James Mac Millan's Percussion Concerto later... nice and loud and discordant.

I'm glad to hear you were able to get some glass into the display - and a bit surprised there wasn't a lot more!
I had my brother here last week, and I tried to fob this off on him - he likes and uses Kilner jars.
He deliberately left it behind.   :-\

I was surprised too Sue, there was a lot of pottery/ceramics but no-one else seems to have glass. Mind you I thought I only had 3 or 4 pieces, and then found there was 14 in total! ;D

World's Smallest Collection of Monart?

The images below show our entire collection of Monart. I believe it is the smallest item they ever made, shape ZH, at less than 2cm high by 9 cm across.

Short of not having any specimens at all, is this the smallest possible collection of Monart?

Trevor

PS. We don't expect sympathy for our relative deprivation, because we collect mostly Australian studio glass. Contributions to expand our Monart collection, however, will not be refused.

A nice little ashtray, the colour code is 162. Though not the smallest piece of Monart, I have a pin dish/bowl shape GE which is 8cm wide 1.75cm high.

I was the underbidder Nemmie, you would have had a proper fight on your hands if I had been 'serious' about it (I have too many Tricorns already).  Is your new bottle completely round or is it just a little triangular? It looks like an interesting variation on the norm.

Too many Tricorns? I am not sure I would ever be able to say that. After all everyone is different!

Unless you are running out of room. I can certainly understand that.

Perfectly round, it's like a baseball bat.

A friend of mine sold me his D'avesn koi fish charger after pestering him to sell it to me
and it was this that got me hooked on the artist, didn't know a thing about him at the time but I know a little bit more now.
I collect glass purely because of the beauty of it and not of the value and I could not part with any of my collection of glass.
Thankyou for looking,best wishes Alan.

But some new shelfs have been installed, so the table will be empty soon (at least for a short period)

This is as crowded as I get:  5 items on a 35cm x 37cm shelf.  All the others have 2-4 pieces gracing their surface.

Michael I LOVE those!
Anik, me too...however we have a small room in the house that has built in shelves, which was where our books were kept.  They have been moved to a built in cupboard in another room and I have the small room to store all my glass not on display.  They are now full.  The deal is that I am not supposed to buy any more glass until I sell some in the small room  ::)  I'm not keeping to my end of the bargain, I confess

My theme here is £10 or under, these Monart pieces were all bought for £10 or under, each one has varying degrees of damage but display fine. The cheapest was the perfume bottle at £1.21 and the dearest was the cigarette holder (2nd from left) at £10.

Spent a very happy day yesterday reorganising part of my collection see picture.....I like colour co-ordinating !! The rest is on windowsills all over the house...uranium in Kitchen, blue in Bathroom &  Bedroom and Amber in guest room and Lounge. Oh I forgot the flint in two huge cupboards in the Kitchen ... will need a bigger house soon. :)

Jambo Simba!
I am trying to be more organised as well... and have started to colour co-ordinate my collection.  Those shelves look great... I must go and have a look at Ikea.
I also have windowsills filled with glass, and in the kitchen I keep all the new arrivals so I can get to know them,  then when the sills are full, I move some away to other tables, shelves, windowsills, cupboards and the like.
Once upon a time, I did quietly mention to John that if he got rid of all his books I would have more room to display my glass... in fairness he has three wall to wall, floor to ceiling shelving sets he built in for his books (thousands of them!)!  I got this look :o and this one  ::) ! I just  :'(

Why Simba BTW?

Why Simba?.....sad story ....when I joined my dear old dog had just died he was called Simba so I used Simba as my 'username' in memory of him... real name Angela. I tried shifting some of my husbands books to make way for more glass....he soon put a stop to that. Though I have a plan to put an extension in the loft and move him and his books up there.   Simba is the border collie and the German Shepherd is Tess our other dog who is here at my feet.

Oh Angela, I'm so sorry you lost your lovely doggie.....I asked because Simba is Swahili for Lion,  and I speak Swahili and thought you might too.
I have a herd of elephants amongst my collection of animals.....last count, 60+ of them, 12 of which are Isle of Wight....another one arrived this morning.  I will post some pictures tomorrow. It's time I added a few more of my collection!

I seem to be on a Finnish streak at the moment - lots of lovely colourful Riihimaki.  Although the Per Lutken collection has reached 55 I discovered today.  So you have lots more lovely glass to collect.

I came across a lovely Humppila bowl the other day in an antiques centre & got a bit excited about the find but it wasn't signed as all my other Humppila pieces are & on close inspection it had a bruise so I'm guessing it was a factory second.

-  Kosta Boda
-  Recent buys & More Rercent buys have many Scandi bits as well.

That yellow vase in the middle Flying Free.  Is it rather solid - say 3 to 4 mms thick glass.  If so, have you attributed it yet.  It reminds me strongly of a piece I have that I originally thought to be Holmegaard but turned out not to be.

Hi Ross, no I haven't definitely but I think it is Empoli. I wouldn't instinctively have thought it was Scandinavian.  Yes it's good thick glass, heavy piece and nicely made.  It has similarities in design to a pink vase I have that was id'd on here as Empoli.  The way the foot goes in and makes it look like a skirt type thing.
I'll try and find the link to the pink vase as that might help.

Quote from flying free "Looks gorgeous but many vases were made as display pieces in themselves, not just to be used for flowers". I really cant comment on other glassmakers, but in Monart case, vases were made and sold for the use of flowers ect and not just for display. The first photo is from the British Industries Fair at Olympia in London circa 1930s the second  photo is from J Moncrieff advertisement materail circa 1920s.

Thank you - there's a few animals dotted around this place and one picture here shows another unit in another room with some glass. Bunny all on it's own as well and seeing as you mentioned tellys - a few in here and picture of one included seeing as it is near some glass.  8)

...and then there's other things with bits of glass on or in them although one room currently only has one bit of glass in it as all the fish that were in it have swum off.
Trying to think of a link to the thread title but I suppose my theme is stuff what I like although touches of colour blocking are going on.

Lovely, lovely, lovely!  Thank you for sharing.
The bunny is either Avondale or Caithness I think, although Avondale often put a carrott in their paws.  Is that an anteater further down in a lower picture?
I love the retro TV... and all your animals on display have made me feel quite normal... Hee hee!!
A few of mine are here, but I have about 700 now!!

The ellimous is an endangered species Alistair, and should be guarded carefully... until recently it was misnamed the mousiephant, but careful genetic monitoring has disproved this altogether. Treasure him.

Post by: Elisif on September 05, 2012, 02:27:22 PM
Hi!
I have found these vases in fleamarkets and need your help to identify and if you can, perhaps give me a clue about their value. They might be worthless, but I don't know and won't start giving them away before i do ;)
Thanks a lot =)
The left, amber vase is approx. 45 cm tall.
Next to it is a vase from Magnor, 32 cm tall.
Number 3 from left is 25 cm tall.
Number 4 is 18 cm, tall and labelled Vidrios
Number five, 17,5 am tall
Number 6, labelled riihimäen lasi, 21 cm tall
Number 7 & 8 is 12 cm tall, from Magnor

Hello and welcome to the board  :)
Thanks for sharing some of your lovely collection - you have some great shapes there.   I'm sure someone will be able to help identify many of your pieces.
To help everyone using the board to be able to refer to vases once they have been identified, please can you put up each piece on a separate thread and ensure your pictures enlarge so the detail of each piece can be seen.  I tend to make mine around 600 on the longest side and this seems to work.
It also helps if you post no more than three different items per day otherwise it tends to push other people pieces off the first page  :)
A description of each piece is also helpful, what kind of rim, the dimensions, what the base is like etc along with a side on pic, a base pic and any other pics (max of 4 per post) that you feel will be helpful to id.
I'm looking forward to seeing larger pictures of your vases.

Well, I certainly enjoyed it, and I can think of someone else who probably did, too  ;)  I think I spotted a couple of 'triffids' in your collection, which is what most of mine consists of.

I'm shown my collection before, but I'm always adding to it so here it is again.  I can't show it under UV light, as I'm not good enough at photographing things under UV, but here's a link to a pic of my Uranium cabinet.  It's even had a few additions since the pic was taken, but I can't keep taking a new pic every time I buy something else  ;D

Not sure how much more I can fit in! What shall I do then?  I've already moved all the Cranberry and Uranium stuff out to a shelf in another cabinet!  :o

I Love both of your collection photos! Any of your pieces missing 'Thorns'? There hard too find in undamaged condition!

;D ;D ;D  I had to laugh at your question! While I do have a few in perfect condition, MOST of my collection are missing thorns! - at the very least!  Many are missing toes, feet and even legs!  ::)  You are right, it is nearly impossible to find these without damage of some sort.  But as long as they 'still display well' as the saying goes, I don't mind   :)

Alister,
(sorry, not been on this thread for a while)

I think some of the swans on your top shelf are Edinburgh Crystal ones. I've seen them with labels on, have come to be able to recognise them, although your images don't blow up quite well enough for me to be sure....

and... big question here! Do I see a neodynum deer with coloured long horns in there? Are the horns amber, and are they uranium, and is there any other colour in it?

Does it look as if it is related to this little beauty? (scroll down to the second post for the daylight pics)

Most of my glass collection is from the North East of England, with a preference for that of the glassworks of my home town Sunderland/Monkwearmouth so it is mostly old.  Since I also collect sewing machines and...well lets say I have a double dose of the collectors gene, space is limited.
These are a small selection of my miniatures most of which I think you will recognise-the really fine cranberry is Glasscraft from the North East, the tiny (less than 1cm) dolphin & penguin were made as I waited at a fair at the hotel used for the tv soap 'Crossroads' around 1985.
I do sometimes worry about putting all my eggs in one basket.

Keith, I see two Webb pwts there - the one on the left looks as if it's the spider engraving, but the one on the right looks as if it might be one of the other designs - it seems to have star-cutting on the base.
I thought the Uranium weights were always spiders....  ???
Can anybody enlighten me?

I have my Uranium spider, and that's the only one I want, Keith.
The paperweightiness of it is a minus point, (I don't collect pwts) but the uranium and the spider are two major plus points I could not resist.  ;D
In Hajdamach, 20th Century British Glass, p.379, the caption to plate 806, (a photograph of these weights) reads;

"Cased, cut and engraved weights by Webb Corbett from the mid-1970s. Designed by David Smith, the work's designer, the weights were only made for a short period of time."

Shame we don't know exactly how short. :-\

Glass shelves, Iittala, Riihimaen, Orrefors, Nuutajarvi, and more.

Good news, Apple just did a massive update and now I can upload directly from my iPad to boards. Excellent!

Loving your glass "column" dispay shelving almost as much as the glass!

This isn't really a display image, but I had perfect light in the utility room for the first time this year, decided to grab the window of opportunity to take some pics. Of course, the batteries were flat and I didn't manage much and the sun had moved by the time the batteries were charged.
I had these bits lined up, waiting to be properly posed etc. for individual and group pics, when the sun caught them and they all just came alive - I had to grab this pic before it vanished! Obviously it's a flat, 2-D image, you can't capture the effect of the experience of seeing it in one flat image.

hmm I was hoping to edit that post? Can you not do that any more? I've gone on a couple arrangement missions of the shelves this year, then I get distracted because I have so much glass so I end up with mish mash shelves or shelves that are nearly empty or just crowded to the point of ridiculousness. It's definitely a work in progress for me. I need more shelves.

Selena posted a thread back.. she had a tall white piece with lilies I think, and an amber piece with birds..

The white one is Josephinenhuette and the amber one is most likely Harrach (maybe Josephienhuette as well)

What a beautiful collection Alisa,  and I even noticed a few little animals sneaking into one of the cabinets!!  :)

I laughed when I read you kept getting distracted when reorganising!  I have the same problem!  I need more shelves and have over 10 boxes of glass animals and birds packed away.
Believe it or not, I promised myself I would never do this and could never understand how anyone could,  but, well here I am with not enough cupboards and too few shelves with too many pieces of glass I can't bear to part with!!

According to my friends,  I am obsessed with glass and am now classed as a serious collector!!  :o

I've never been able to display my glass until now. I've bought and assembled some cabinets especially for my bits and pieces.  Here is my tall cabinet with my favourite pieces.  No theme really except 'organised'!

And here is one of two wall mounted cabinets for glass figures.  This one is mostly the larger items and I've yet to get the other one on the wall for the smaller figures.

I'm so pleased I've finally got somewhere to put these things.  :)

No wonder you were desperate to show them off, Nancy - what fabulous arrangements!
I even love the pink cats - they look as if they're poised to make a very nasty stink....

It certainly is true m and Nancy!  I found the perfect cabinet from Lidl for all the smaller pieces, went back to get a couple more and they had all gone!!

If you see what you want,  get them whilst you can,  all the shops seem to change their styles so quickly!! Aaaagh!

Hey Rosie, my cabinet with the figures was from Lidl - possibly the same one you got, only I got two! It is very comforting to have stuff behind glass and know that one will never have to get the duster to them.

Hi Nancy,  I got the tall version of the birchwood framed one like yours and it was so well made,  which is why I went back for more,  but alas...well you know with Lidl, when it's gone it's gone.  I wrote to HQ and they said to look out for more in a couple of months....so I am on Lidl Alert!!

I have all my IOW minimals and a few other smaller pieces in it and it does look good.

What a superb tricorn bottle - best I've seen, ever!
The Onion vase is good too - they're very interesting. When the book was being writen, nobody had a clue how scarce they were - but they were considered to be very scarce. This was based on how many had been seen over the lifetimes of both Mark Hill and Ron Wheeler - but was before Mdina became as highly collectable as it is now.
The "price" listed in the seperate printed guide (which came with the first 100 or so copies) was therefore perhaps slightly OTT at £1500.  ;D  (albeit signed by MH)

And Onion bottles started coming out of the woodwork like nobody's business! (well, maybe 30 or so ::))

It was found too, that they had been made for a short while after MH left, probably by Joseph Said - I would suspet yours is his work - his tend to have the more bulgy bottom part; MH's ones tend to have a much smoother curve from base to rim; and his stripes are more regular.

The thing I find very interesting is that, since the initial rush they have dried up almost completely.
Perhpas the initial "very scarce" diagnosis was more correct than later assumed.  :)

Thanks Sue. I was really pleased with Tricorn bottle. It's quite a recent purchase. Can post some more pics if you're interested. The onion vase is a signed Michael Harris piece. Had to push the boat out a little further for that one but still well worth it I think...

;D So much for my bulgy bottom theory!
Good to find out that I was wrong - I won't make that mistake again.  8)
I don't buy signed stuff - far too expensive - and a piece doesn't look any different for having something written on the base. The only signed bits I have, I got very early on.

I keep my Onion vase (un-signed, and un-bulgy-bottomed) on a Davisdon green cloud glass plinth. It really does look extra good, slightly elevated by a nice plinth.

Plinth is a good idea, Sue. I think I have one somewhere. Completely agree with you that it's only worth getting signed pieces if you don't have to pay a premium for them. After all, the beauty is in the piece not the signature...

My tricorn bottle isn't amethyst (*pout*) - just plain old blue, (but I got it for £12 + p&p  ;D).

£12!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me it was a long time ago!?

I love the bottles. I'm quite keen to get my hands on an Isle of Wight attenuated bottle.

Do you know when Tricorns were in production from and till, Sue?

Is Amethyst a rarer/more desirable colour?

Looking forward to when I finally get to move so I can get everything on display again...

Yes, it was a very, very long time ago.  Probably around 2001.

I believe the tricorn bottles were not produced after Michael Harris left, and amethyst would be more scarce - yours is the first I've seen - and I happen to like amethyst, so to me it is more desirable.

Gary - you are just plain weird. ;)

It is all properly organised, colour co-ordinated, beautifully balanced and beautifully lit.
There is not one speck of dust in sight.
You have spaces between the pieces you are displaying.
The architecture of your house, the furniture, the accessories, are all period matched...

are you in league with old nick that you have succeeded in achieving all that?  8) 8) 8)

Simba - delighted to see your bathroom is not devoid of glass - so many folk forget that is a room which has space for glass - your display is very apt - lovely cool watery colours, and elegant shapes. just the right sort of atmosphere.

Liking it is the best and only way to go! What is that great big lollipop at the top?

I normally put my glass together by era, but I find that quite limiting.  So I've tried to just use colour and shape  as the deciding factor here.
The age range is about 125 years from earliest (Molineaux Webb pike 1885) to most recent (blue bowl 2011)  and covers Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, 60s/70s and early ish and more recent Studio glass.

I've been playing around with the camera settings to try and get some good pics.
This glass is in a room used in the evening rather than daytime - the last pic is what it looks like during the day.

The main theme is 'how much colour can we get on one windowsill' ;) with a sub theme of cased/sommerso (mainly Italian) and a smattering of uranium glass. I love watching the colours and intensity change as the light alters during the day and night. Sorry it's not the best of photos but it's very difficult to photograph glass in a window! I put an extra pic of the left hand end as it doesn't show at all in the main photo.

This is one of my favourite time of the year, the leaves on the trees are turning into amazing colours of reds, orange, brown and yellow.
Below is my Monart Autumn Colour Collection 2015.
posted 2 to many pictures do not know how to remove them ::)

I'm always amazed seeing the displays over here, so much attention to detail and passion that just jumps out of the images!

Perhaps I should be calling this Mdina Towers then. :D

Just moved house and have stacked this lot on an old bookcase. It is most but not all of the Mdina I have here topped off by attenuated bottles from Isle of Wight Studio Glass. It won't stay like this as I will spread the glass around the place.

I'm not sure I would be shifting them, John. It looks pretty amazing to me.  ;D

There is a cat that visits and she tends to make herself at home, I am worried that she might knock things over so any displays are going to have to be 'cat safe'. Items will have to be out of jumping range and stuck down with museum gel.

My felines are pretty well behaved - they're just moggies and so far, I haven't had an adventurous one in combination with glass.
To discourage feline interest, I shoved a load of lemons amongst the bits of glass on the bottom and next up shelves. The smell was enough to make them mostly ignore it as a climbing frame.
But if it's near a window a cat might like to look out of, stick it all down firmly.
If they suddenly see something outside, they'll not pay a blind bit of attention to what they kick over on their way to get a better look.

Lit by a couple of strip lights, the top of these kitchen cabinets should be feline proof...

I like the ledge that sticks out a bit on the top there.  :)
I covered the surface of my cupboard tops with greaseproof paper before putting glass up on them, it helps stop them from getting stuck with kitchen grease. They still get dirty, but can be cleaned. It's just easier than trying to clean the flat surface.
I don't use the extractor fan. The noise frightens the cats too much and I don't like it either.

The tops of kitchen cupboards are wonderful places for displaying glass.  8)

Absolutely love that display John - the shapes and colours are perfect.
Are the strip lights electric? (secretly wondering how to strip light my long shelf ledge in the kitchen now)
