Grotesque Crackle Glass Fish
« on: April 03, 2007, 09:17:43 AM »
Yet another fish to add to my collection!

This is yet another grotesque looking one finished in amber crackle glass and applied bits and bobs.

10½" (26.5cm) long and 7" (18cm) tall

I've seen Bernard's mention of a Walsh crackle glass fish, but any idea of who/where/what is most welcome 8)

Frank: will send on larger file for Zoo

David — The problem is that there is just not enough information available to attribute these with confidence.   They might be Walsh, but I've seen one with a Swedish glassworks label.

The problem with all these friggers that went into production is that you are not looking at the product of a glassworks, but the product of one particular glassmaker.   Each had their own favourite style and tools like pincers.   This explains why there are three quite different styles of Nazeing/Davidson fish — three different glassmakers.   The only constant with these is that they used standard Nazeing colours, and they match on most aspects of construction technique.

The best chance I have of attributing one is that it was part of a garniture set with a pair of candlesticks, which gives us a lot more information.

I really like them.   So full of character.

Thanks for the information – I agree they are full of character!

Are there photos of the three styles? It would be interesting to catalogue these.

There are 4 Nazeing fish showing at the Zoo, 3 in black and white which does not help with colour. And in the Articles section under Glassmaking a set of photographs of them being made at Nazeing.
