Bamboo vases
« on: April 14, 2007, 12:46:20 AM »
Some while ago I found a pair of pinky/brown vases in a bamboo shape - see pics here: http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pos=-729 - they stand 5½" tall and have no maker's marks on them at all.  I've searched and searched to try and find who made them and today had what looks like a breakthrough: another pair on sale on eBay - a boxed & labelled pair! The seller says they are labelled Saxony, Made in the USSR - see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250101308255 - which are also 5½" tall.  So, has anyone heard of Saxony glass please and in what timescale (other than pre-breakup of the USSR?) - they are not listed in Ivo's little book.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

They are not listed in Carolus Hartmann's book"Glasmarken Lexicon" although he does record a "Saxonia Werk, vorm. Insam & Co. who made Einkochglas (whatever that was). Dates not known, located in Germany.
There is nothing like that in any of my three books on Russian glass. And Saxony glass is not in Pickvet's Encyclopedia of Glass and not in Glass A to Z.
Saxony, of course, was not in Russia.
Hope someone has more luck than I did.
Best regards
Angela
ps they look more like Scandinavian to me. But then, if she has a box!

It might not be the original box?

Might Saxony be the name of the range, rather than the name of the maker/area?
Thank you very much!

Most likely as Saxony is an anglicisation of the German Sachsen and USSR is also an anglicisation. Look for an English or American importer using the name. The State of Saxony was abolished in the East German division but has been reinstated since.

Thanks for checking that, Angela. The nearest I can get to Einkochglas is One Cook Glass - presumably meaning only heated once, or could it be glass made by only one person, like lampwork? (Glassmaker help needed here methinks!)

There is nothing like that in any of my three books on Russian glass. And Saxony glass is not in Pickvet's Encyclopedia of Glass and not in Glass A to Z. Saxony, of course, was not in Russia.

Again, thank you for looking it up in those. I'm thinking Saxony is the trade/range name perhaps, as Lynne said above... a bit like my elusive Astra Glass earlier turned out to be.

ps they look more like Scandinavian to me. But then, if she has a box!

That was my first thought as well but the colour doesn't seem to fit too well which the other Scandi stuff I've looked at. It's an odd pinky/brown, not a proper pink nor an amber brown.

It might not be the original box?

That's true enough Cathy. Mine weren't boxed when I found them, but the fact that there's a pair on eBay and I have a pair made me wonder if they were originally.

Most likely as Saxony is an anglicisation of the German Sachsen and USSR is also an anglicisation. Look for an English or American importer using the name. The State of Saxony was abolished in the East German division but has been reinstated since.

Ahhhh that's true, Frank.  I think this may be a longer search than I first imagined it would be!  ::)

"Saxony" is an export brand. Saxony glassware was made in the USSR in different Soviet republics. So Saxony label on the glass narrows things down to USSR but still leaves with a broad range of possibilities.

Bamboo vase was made in Estonia, Tarbeklaas glassworks. It is a part "Valli" set and designer is Pilvi Ojamaa.

Hallo
I think the Bamboo Vase is from Bo Bergström for Aseda Schweden. I think the box is not original to the vase.

Einkochglas or Einmachglas or Einweckglas means that this is speacily made for conserving fruits and vegetable by cocking . This Glas is heatstable and usualy has a lid with a rubber band between lid and glas.
One of the most used glasses are these from weck.

Me again
https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-glass-vessels-wirte-glass-and-superfest-drinking-glass-025-litre-made-24440026.html

Saxonia Glas is possibly Sachsenglas Schwebnitz. The made superhard drinking glasses in the GDR. And I think they made Einkochglas as well.  Some of these drinking glasses look a little bit like the bamboo vase, but I still think it is Aseda

Found Aseda bamboo vase in the wild, so I´ll add it here to show the difference between "Valli" and Aseda vase.
