Another Mdina Signature Question
ckscot:
Thanks to all for your input. It's hard for me to see Dobson or Said in the signature, OR to say that it couldn't be either. And it's kind of reassuring to realise that others can't decipher signatures so easily either. Looks like whoever signed it went to writing classes at medical school....... ;D
I've just put it on Ebay, so we'll see if anyone else has any ideas. Regards, iain

Hi there,
Thanks for quoting my book Christine, as that will save typing as it's nearly half one in the morning right now! Can't remember the name of the thread where I wrote this before, otherwise I'd put a link in, not that I even know how to do that, but...
As far as we know, both Dobson and Said signed themselves, and others signed for them. All are variable in precise format and swirly. I think the rough rule is that Said ends in a 'high' letter with the 'd' and Dobson ends in a 'low' letter with the 'n'. I'd think this was Dobson or someone signing for him. MH was a skilled engraver, so his signature is exactly as Pip says - very very neat and regular. It's also very legible.
Nice piece though - signed and dated pieces from after MH left do seem to fetch a premium over unsigned and undated post-MH pieces on eBay, it seems to me.
