Identify the Unidentified: Your chance to get some free glass
« on: August 03, 2007, 10:38:39 AM »
Over the next week I will be uploading photographs of all the unidentified glass we have here at Nazeing. Each picture will come with information on the size of the piece, to help identification. For every three items that you identify, we will send you a free glass gift as a token of our appreciation. The more pieces you identify, the better the gift will be. For example if you were to positively identify 20 pieces, you should be in for something very special. There are at least 200 items here that need to be looked at, so no matter how long you've been interested in glass, theres a good chance you'll find something in there that you recognize.

Where possible, please can you reveal as much as you can on the identity of an item, not just its maker. Designers, Pattern numbers, suite names, the years that it was produced, etc. All of that information is not strictly neccesary, but it can't do any harm!

Positive identification will be needed, not just maybes. We already have a long list of maybes for all of these items! Also if you know anyone from the board personally that only visits every couple of weeks or so, now might be a good time to give them a nudge so they can get something out of this too  :) .

Let the fun begin, and good luck!  ;D

p.s. (over the weekend I will set up a system where all the images are on one link with numbers that you can see easily, but in the mean time, here are a few direct links to get your started.

Many of those will also need a view of the bottom.

Hello,

Frank is quite correct, we need pictures of the bases, and in order to be quite accurate we need measurements height and/or diameter.

However, despite this, on a quick run through, there are probable items, including Mdina and a piece courtsey of T K Maxx, Whitefriars/S&W, etc.

There are also definate items:

10) Is, as Max says, Davidsons Cloud glass
11) S&W bubbled amethyst
12) Whitefriars

It's good to see interaction with a Museum, but, I feel, odd that elementary pieces are being included for identification.

Nigel

No. 6
There's one of these in "Is it Whitefriars ?" on the Whitefriars site, ref 1578. Someone has described it as "Stromberg". I have one myself so I would like to know more.

The dimensions will also help, if possible.

Rob's included the sizes in the filenames but they're not so easy to see as if they were on the page.

Woah! The format and photos up at the moment are just to get started on, otherwise there would be nothing to look at in this thread. I've nearly got the whole lot uploaded now, and they will be accompanied by dimensions. As it stands i havn't got photos of the bases of the items, and as you can imagine to take a photo of all of them, resize and uploading them all would take a good couple of days. Especially as they are all packed up in boxes now. However if there are particular items that you desperately "need" to see the bottom for id, then I will take odd photos as and when they are requested. I know its not ideal, but I really dont have the luxury of a couple days at the moment. I am pretty sure that there are no hidden signatures on the bottoms though, as many many pieces have already been identified this way.

Anyway check back tomorrow sometimes. They should all be done then

Ahhh but it's not just signatures we like to look at bottoms for (if you get my drift!  >:D)  The way the bottom is finished can often tell those who are bottom-studiers quite a lot about a piece.  :D
