Mdina vase ID help
« on: June 20, 2005, 07:16:53 PM »
Hi,

This vase looks Mdina-ish to me, and in fact, I saw the identical piece with a Mdina signature along with an artist's signature on ebay a few months back. From what I remember, the designer was important in Mdina, and the vase sold for quite a big. Does anyone here know the name of this designer, or recognize my vase? Here are the photos:

Thanks!

:D Nice one! Early Mdina, designer Michael Harris, who went on to found Isle of Wight Studio Glass. Michael Harris was director of the RCA in London, before going to Malta to set Mdina up. Sam Herman took over the RCA when MH left. (Info from Lesley Jackson's 20th Century Factory Glass). After MH left Malta in '72, Mdina carried on making his designs, and a variation of this one is still made today. I can't say if this definitely was made when MH was still there, or shortly after he left, but it's still a lovely early piece! I really like the bubbly yellow in it. I wish it was mine!

:D Michael Harris went to Malta in '68 and was there until '72, so I'd guess this vase is from anytime then up until mid-ish '70s, but that's just my opinion.

I know this thread is quite old but,

this Mdina piece is the "onion" vase and worth 3 figures.
