Tapio Cake Plate - Is it Possible?
« on: October 23, 2007, 03:22:25 PM »
Here's a large, very heavy and finely made cake plate that appears to be in the "Tapio" pattern, designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced (I presume) by Iittala.  I can find no references to this item in the series on the internet, and am wondering if it in fact is a Tapio item, as opposed to a knock-off.  When would it have been produced, and would this be a scarce item?  It certainly works nicely for intended purpose - I get all kinds of compliments.
Thanks,
Charles.

I'm afraid the piece is from Krosno, sorry.

Thanks Ivo.  I use it and I didn't pay too much, so I'm not disappointed.  Too bad it's not a rare and valuable piece.  Interesting, though, the care they took to imitate so closely Tapio.  As the expression goes, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."  I should note, the quality is quite fine.

Charles.

Krosno is nice quality, at least the known pieces I have are - they're just an ordinary jug and a water set. I think the problem may be that much of it is imitative rather than innovative and a lot is made to order for somebody else's label
