Topic: Onion shaped crystal jug decanter ID help?

Another from my latest auction haul.  It's not what I usually buy, but it seemed such good quality.  As usual though, I've got no idea where it's from, by whom or when.  So any help appreciated.  It's about  12.5" tall, with a star shaped base and lots of wear marks on base.

More views would help, is the stopper blown or solid?

Hi Frank, Sorry, couldn't get organised to post more photos yesterday, but I have some now.  I tend to be a bit mean with photos, forgetting it's not Ebay and I won't get charged for more than one!

In answer to your question, I hadn't noticed before but, the stopper is blown.  The handle is also cut quite beautifully with three what you might call diamond cuts on the outside, so it catches the light really well, although maybe not so brilliantly in my photo since it's a very dull day.

Have you looked at the Whitefriars catalogues on Whitefriars .com,could be one of theirs,and they didnt mark them

Thanks, I have now,  but I can't find anything that really looks much like mine.   But I did discover that I should refer to it as a 'shaft and globe claret jug' rather than an onion shaped decanter, so that's progress!

I thought it looked blown.
Stevens and Williams called them Claret Decanters.

I am very much a novice on cut glass, which is a problem as I have to categorise thosands of cut glass catalogue pics... I had a quick look through my S&W but not there.

I wonder if there is any reason why a top is blown rather than being solid?

Try and get hold of Andy McDonnel's Decanters, published a few years ago - he might look in here too.
