Pezzato Bowl
« on: January 14, 2008, 03:11:40 AM »
I bought a pezzato bowl a few weeks ago. My research has turned up only the following match for it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/94898695@N00/82924196
I do not think the bowl is either Fuga or Martens, as the link suggests. The bowl doesn't look like anything else I have seen from these designers. The bowl is heavy (6 lbs) and is about 10.5" long. It feels like a heavy Barbini piece. I've attached three pictures of it. I hope that someone can help.

That's a nice looking bowl! This is by no means conclusive, but I can tell you that I've seen lots of Polish glass pieces with these kinds of holes in them lately, and I have noticed that they will tend to have a number of color combos done in the same form. Hopefully I'm wrong, and I wouldn't be surprised considering my lack of experience!

Thanks for looking, Shannon. The bottom of the bowl has some vintage wear, so it is probably a mid-century piece. I suspect it is Murano, though without a definite identification, I can't say for sure. From the feel of the bowl, I am leaning more toward Barbini or Fratelli Toso -- just guesses right now.

Anita... I will leave it up to you to decide if this is something similar or not. Because I can't really tell from your pictures what color the surrounding glass is.

I sold this years ago. It had lots of base wear and I have no doubt dated from the forties or fifties.

Never found out who made it... I had seen two examples of similar vases attributed to a good maker I can't remember who.

Today... I think it was probably a small company in Murano that had a limited production and didn't last long. That's the best I can do...

It does look very similar, Springhead, in the thickness of the glass. The rim also reminds me of my bowl. The main difference I see is in the patches. The ones in my bowl look like they are cut-out blocks of glass that butt up against each other. Your vase look like the patches are better fused with the glass, so fade in and out like spots. I like the vase. It looks very well made.

Murano Magic reminds us that there were a lot of small companies out there that did pieces for a short time. I have only bought one piece -- an Alberto Toso vase -- that I knew was from one of these small companies, but I bet several of the mystery Murano pieces were made by them.

I thought about what my problem may be finding out something about the bowl. I may be defining pezzato incorrectly. The color pieces in the bowl are cased, i.e., they are on the inside. Is glass only considered pezzato if it is done on the surface? If so, then the color glass of the bowl would be murrines.

Sometimes I think I know just enough about glass to be utterly confused,

You are using the right term... in the 1950"s the classic forms were reinterpreted... the pezatto were incased in thicker glass. Fulvio Bianconi encased the fasce (wide strips) in thicker glass in the fifties. They are still called fasce. As with the pezzato, murrines etc...
