Rose, yours won't glow, believe me. These rustic/thorn little vases were made in various different countries and they all copied each other's ideas, so we really can't be sure where yours or the one on ebay was made

Yes, I would also bet money yours doesn't glow, Rose.  Mine which is similar in style doesn't, although I have plenty which do - my main area of collecting  ;)  The 'spatter' ones rarely do. Although you might find one colour of glass in the 'spatter' which reacts under UV, I very much doubt it!

If you want to see examples of thorn vases, go to the Glass Gallery and look for Leni's Triffids! I think it's up to date and they're all in there! :D

Leni, what is this opalescent vaseline piece?

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-1116

I've had my eye on one just like this for a long time, but I know so little about this kind of glass...I don't know how much I should spend, or which pieces are old and/or valuable.

Yes, as shandiane asks, what would be a ballpark price to spend on these....average?

Shannon, that's one of my few American pieces.  It's a variant of the Northwood 'Open Opal'.  Mine's early, and really does have an open stem.  Later copies were solid.  This is the thread where I asked about it when I first got it  ;D  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2716.msg20358.html#msg20358

As for prices Rose, well I've paid everything from about £1 to £100 for the pieces in my collection!  It really does depend on the condition, and how 'fancy' they are!  These thorn vases often suffer damage - either the thorns get chipped or they lose a 'toe' or even a whole foot!  Many of mine are damaged, but I try to photograph them so that it doesn't show (which proves what sellers often say, "Still displays well"  >:D :) )  I don't mind buying damaged ones, as I reckon since some of them are over 120 years old they are entitled to be a bit less than perfect. (I'm not quite half that, and I know I'm somewhat battered, so ....  ;) ;D )

Super Response Leni.... and I am sure you *still show very well* too.

Yes, the thorny things...I note some of your are really thorny ( :spls:) seriously.  Yours have larger thorns, and bigger feet, where as mine the thorns are not as long.  The longer thorns of course would get damaged easier.  I guess the thorns were just the variety of the design...I must say different!

Glad I decided to buy it.  I am glad Shannon was curious about the price, too.  I was a little worried (since I HAD NEVER seen such a thing) that I had paid too much.

He wanted $49 for it, I got it for $32.  (haggle, haggle)  So I guess that is OK if in the ballpark of 120 years old.... ;)

Thanks LENI

Thanks Leni! I'll have to go back and see if the one I saw is still there. I think the price on it was $19, and it had the open bottom like yours. Your collection is beautiful!

Thanks again,
Shannon

Good grief!  :o :o :o What a monster!  I wonder if they'll get any offers in the region of their asking price  ;)

And interesting that only the feet seem to react strongly to UV.  Just what I was commenting on in another thread about the different types of glass used in these pieces!  ::)
