Timo Sarpaneva 3356 vase
« on: February 21, 2008, 04:57:48 PM »
Have just lucked into one of the above.  Oh joy!

It's gorgeous.  A smoky grey colour, and the bark detail is very intricate.  Signed on the base.  20cm tall and between 16 and 18 cm across at the rim. Not able to post photos at the mo'.

As is all too often the case, I am in the middle of nowhere and will be unable to access my books and reference info for the next few weeks.

I know this is a nice piece, but can remember nothing about it.  Could someone please post some info about it - Iittala or not, date first issued, relative rarity, etc.  I am spending my days with a bunch of Philistines who think I've wasted my money and would love to be able to straighten them out asap   :chky:

I've googled and found:
http://www.antiikkigalleria.com/lasi.htm
http://designlasi.com/galleria.php?kuvaID=122&lang=1&sarja_id=4
http://www.huuto.net/fi/showitem.php3?itemid=71400691

All very nice, but my command of Finnish isn't perhaps what it should be .

Any info gratefully received.
Thanks

Hi Chris,

Yes, Iittala. Designed in 1964 and produced from 1964-1970. Shown on pg. 228 of Iittala, 125 years of Finnish Glass.
Rarity - Haven't got a clue, sorry.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

Thank you, ladies.

Both for the info and for being pleased at my good fortune.

The vase has obviously been living in a house full of smokers.  After a spot of warm water and detergent, it's a lot more silvery and a lot less brown.  I've been told that the colour is supposed to be "smoke grey", but honestly!  :)

I'm terrified to carry it home on the plane. I'd better buy a whole new roll of bubblewrap.

Photo added.
I've been told it's from the Finlandia series.
Best £4 I've spent in ages...
