Is this milk glass?
« on: February 27, 2008, 02:36:07 PM »
Is this vase milk glass? It has a pool of clear glass at the bottom inside. It has two different creatures heads (painted on?) Is it a typical 1960s item or is it earlier than I think? Any idea of maker - Help please all you experts .....
Chris

I'll be the fall guy, but it looks like a piece of Italian pottery to me...are you sure it's glass...also a pic of the base is always a good idea.

I'm almost certain it's glass Martyn - have a look at the puddle of glass with bubbles in it (second pic) which is inside. It might be Andy, I just don't know, attaching a photo of base.

Definitely ceramic, look at the rough edge of the foot. The puddle of glass you describe is probably just a thick layer of glaze. The colours and the glaze look very Chinese.

Definately Meditarian, most likely Italian mid century and not dissimilar to some pieces by Guido Gambone (which was the other reason I wanted to see the base) I like it!!

Yes Martyn, my husband agrees with you that it's ceramic! It's so fine it still feels like glass to me but I take your point on the rough foot. We inherited a whole house full of collectors pieces and Uncle who was a great collector had masses of studio pottery pieces but I had actually put this with the glass :-[ ! There are actually 3 pieces of Italian pottery so it's most likely this vase is Italian too. Sorry I bothered all you glass people ... :-[ :-[ and thanks very much  :hiclp:

For the record it was'nt me who mentioned the rough foot and I'm as much a pottery as glass person (as are a few on here) but if you want any help with your ceramics do as Frank says and visit the pottery forum....I think it's a good piece (though not Gambone) BTW.
Best to Hubby,
Martyn.
