Thanks, Marcus. I hadn't seen that biography. The same site has an interesting (and useful) bio of William "Gunboat" Smith - so I must now dig through the site for others. The Ross article shows how the (un)regulated industry worked back then! Larger factories would consume competitors wherever possible.
