Ian — Item 86 in David Watts, Strange & Rare (fully illustrated exhibition catalogue), The Glass Circle, 1987, is a heavy glass cannon, 22.5 cm (9") long, which shows signs of having been fired, and was probably made for a glass fort in a Glassmakers' Procession.   So I don't think a workable anvil unreasonable.

Bernard, this may not help ID your Inkstand, this one does have a date lozenge for the 13th March 1875, Thomas Lane & Sons Birmingham
