Signature on bubble vase F Euzbali ? Eubank ? - ID = Fladgate
« on: November 16, 2004, 05:44:41 PM »
I have struggled with this signature for a while now and tried all sorts of combinations that I think it could be but drawn a blank.
signature

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/avalonsmile/Researching/26_1.jpg

F - seems clear but seems to be an initial
E - appears to me as capitalized E
u - ?
z or g ?
B ? or D ? possibly
a - seems clear
l - seems clear
i - whith a rather Spanish lookin dot (as in Dali's signature)

F. Euzbali ???? Nothing googles for this or any other combo I've tried and the nearest sensible english name is Eubank.
Help ! (+ sorry for using photobucket - beware pop-under) Peter

Hmmm I'm sort of seeing Flugali or Flugati ... could that be it, or Fluzali or Fluzati even?

It's a nice-looking piece though. :)

BTW I'm not getting popups on the Photobucket page, nor even warnings of them (using Firefox under Linux).
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

New pics
Strange I could have sworn I posted the signature pic originally and I also remember Tiger's German double S comment. Obviously going bonkers.
Posting new pics here ...well not so new ..taken 2005

Feussli /Fussli /Fuseli
I have just spent a very frustrating hour or so googling Feussli /Fussli /Fuseli  > A Famous artist and members of his family who were also artists - all in the wrong century !
Seeing some of his work again, I realise I had googled him before.
All 3 spellings for the name were used.
After filtering out all his christian names in various languages and those of his immediate family, and the Swiss Banknote printing company there are still tons of hits but all for antique books and yet more family members.
I was hoping that a descendant had taken up Glass Art but if so I can't find them.

Eussli > nothing
Eubank > maybe time to try this again
Feubal > German but not a name
Feuzal > Chateau de Feuzal but no people with the name it seems.
I'm googled out for now....
Thanks for your interest everyone.
Peter

Glass artists with a name ending in i :
Stanislaw Borowski > Glass animals only
Ioan Nemtoi > Sig doesn't seem to fit. Style of glass not right either. Mine is too plain, unless an early piece.
Rick Strini > ditto plus he's american not often seen in UK.

Plenty of F's
Falcher Fusager > glass jewellery only

Last letter could be T instead of Li (what I thought was the dot iof the i could be the cross of the T)
Robert Eickholt > I've seen an Eickholt signature and it's fairly easy to read + American + too plain for his style.
Tired.....P

Martyn
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
As you can see I have been searching more 4 years or so.
I have written to Deborah to ask her to verify it.
The signature on your weight looks a lot more legible but the item looks more like a huge bowl !! Any chance of a full pic of the weight ? Or is there one posted in the PW forum ?
Thanks again
Pete

I did encourage Deborah to post here but she has responded to me by e-mail along with a large high res pic of a signature.

Dear Peter Morris

Thank you for your enquiry through Axis - I found the suggestions for the signature very amusing but I can confirm that I made that piece!!

"Fladgate" is usually followed by a letter and the date (eg. Fladgate S'84)and the letter referred to where I had made the piece. The 'Bubble Vase' which you have probably has S for Seale (or maybe G for Greenside) and was one of my studio ranges for a few years. (You can just see the paperweight has S'85 the other side from Fladgate).

The individual/one-off pieces I sign "Deborah Fladgate" plus date and I am sending a quick scanned image (not a photo!) of a signature for you to see. In the year 2000 I signed "Deborah Fladgate G'2000" but other years it would be just '01 or '02 etc.
I also attach a CV for your information.
Hope this has helped!
Regards
Deborah Fladgate

4 years is'nt too bad is it...!! Do you still have it?

I've had a few of Deborah's pieces before so the signature was just one of those you recognise without thinking. Pleased to have been able to help, and thanks to Deborah for the confirmation.

Here is the rest of the weight...

(PS. Frank might be interested in the CV, etc.)

I think Frank probably would be. Ask her if I can use her CV and the web info to write up a short article (for her to approve before publication) for Scotland's Glass. We could then perhaps use your photo, Martyn's paperweight and perhaps another photo or two if Deborah would supply them, all with copyright statements and permission of course, for illustration.  :comp:
