Cut glass footed bowl - possibly a US maker?
« on: July 07, 2008, 10:38:56 AM »
Can anyone help with this please? It's a footed bowl, glass not crystal I'm sure. (Has a clink when tapped rather than a clear crystal ring.)

Height: 4½" (115mm), diameter: 8" (200mm)

The foot is very slightly concave with the smallest of dimples which might be a polished pontil scar (½" (10mm).  There is the feint trace of two mould marks on the side of the foot either side of the stem but these fade to nothing within a half-inch (centimeter) again.

The bowl has eight concave ribs internally, the outside of the bowl is totally smooth apart from the cutting. The bowl flares outwards at the top so the rim makes a hexagonal shape.

The cutting shows a floral pattern with a background of vertical cuts with circles at the bottom and ovals at the top of each. (Gosh, this is hard to describe!)  The top rim has a leaf garland, and a sort of seed edging. The cutting has a very fine striated effect (like needlecord on fabric, but finer.)  The glass feels good to the touch and has a nice clear bright look (no grey or yellow cast.)

Photos below show the whole from different angles and the pattern detail.

Looks etched with engraving to me, but I could be wrong.

Frank, it could well be. Thanks for the comment. I'm way out of my comfort zone again with this one, so any and all thoughts welcome.

No etching there, all engraved (cut).  Looks American, perhaps Imperial Molly.  There are a few patterns that are similar.  I don't have time now, but will look through my books later.  Or you might try this site to look at some Molly yourself, see if there are any major differences (search for "molly and imperial" also try "liberty and octagon"):

Thanks Kristi, I had a look but can't find a match as yet.

It is definitely striated - the pattern detail shows the fine lines up on the edge pattern.

Pretty piece! Put US? in the subject line so Ken and James see it. Worth a try.  :X:

I haven't been able to put my finger on it but for some reason this piece reminds me of Cambridge.  I've been pouring over my books for a while trying to find the blank and pattern.  I know that Cambridge used that particular vertical cut on quite a few pieces of stemware, most are Unknowns.  I could be way off here, but just a thought.

Good thinking Janice, have done so. :kissy:

Cypher, thank you! It doesn't feel English to me really (if you know what I mean!) so a US maker is entirely possible. Fingers crossed someone can pin it down for me.

Hi,
I went through my book on Cambridge cuttings and didn't see it, I also checked Pairpoint, I'll keep looking!
