Id required on neodymium vase. Scandi?
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:29:47 PM »
I picked up an unusual vase yesterday at the boot sale and sat it on my desk while I searched the web trying to identify it.  This evening I noticed that although it had started off the day a clear pinky violet colour, it had turned aqua as the lights got turned on.  A bit of experimentation later and I think I have acquired my first piece of neodymium glass :D

So now I would like to know more about it.  Does anyone know who it was made by, or when?  It is quite Scandinavian in style I think.

The photos are a bit rushed and had to be taken without flash as the glass looked clear with a flash (?), so they are a bit dark.

I thought that this glass was really unusual, but I told my dad, and he said he had a similar vase which he checked and it also changed colour, and then this morning I looked at this vase which I bought last week

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=370075604700&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=024

and that is the same!  I am veering towards all three of these being Caithness.  Can anyone tell me any more about neodymium production at Caithness please?  Are they rare, or common as muck?

Caithness used neodymium extensively in their designs. I have maybe seven or eight different Caithness vase designs I've acquired in joblots, etc, and four of them are neodymium.

Your Neodymium bud vase is Murano of quite recent vintage.

Thanks for the answers :)

I did wonder about the bud vase as the design seems quite modern, although at first I thought it might be Scandinavian.  Murano is ok though :)

Is the vase I bought from ebay correctly attributed as Caithness then?  I thought it was a Domhnall OBroin one, that is why I bought it.

Dad says he thinks he remembers buying his from Caithness, so that one is sorted.

The vase in the auction is Caithness, and is actually a lamp base.

You can see it here:

Someone on eBay currently has the other lamp base design: AUCTION

They're very nice designs - especially if you get them fitted out as lamps. I saw a pair of the shorter bases in the sage green colour at an antique fair last year, with brass fittings and simple drum shades - was so tempted to get them, but I just lack the space to actually use them. *sigh*

Seeing your vase I had to show you my apple because it has two labels on it.  One says Made in Sweden on the bottom and the other says Konst.   For what it's worth.

I have one of these with a label. Definitely Murano.
