Jacobean Cologne bottle - 4711
« on: August 20, 2008, 08:04:32 PM »
Hi All,

I found this Jacobean 4711 Cologne bottle recently and wondered how old it was and who made it. The bottom is marked with the 4711 makers name and trademark and the size (150 cc).

My first thought was Inwald...

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

Glen will be able to say more, but I think that it probably isn't Inwald's Jacobean because it lacks the characteristic mirror-polished base.

Chris, I went hunting for info about 4711 bottles last night to see if any others turned up, and very few did other than the well-known one. There were a few plain ones in a museum display and one on Flickr which seems to be the original flat horizontal shape in a neat shade of purple, but nothing like yours above.

There is a history section on the 4711 website which has some old adverts, early TV commercials, and a history of the bottles and labels, none of which mention or even hint at your bottle shape. Most odd!

Hi Anne & Cathy,

Many thanks for your input. I have emailed the 4711 web site and hope they can identify the bottle. I will keep you posted.

Regards

Chris

Hi,
the people at 4711 have been most helpful. This design of bottle was introduced in 1928. My one dates from 1937.

I still don't know who made it, but I'm still guessing Inwald. Otherwise it could have been made under licence to someone else.

Regards

Hi Chris,
I think you are correct in Inwald. This would probably have been made in the packaging glass section at Rudolfova hut', rather than the domestic glass pressing hall. Funnily enough I saw another of these on Saturday, also marked 4711, but with very heavy damage to the neck, so left it well alone, (at €45, way too pricey). ::) ::)
Regards,
Marcus
