I have not seen a salamander / lizard like that one that was made by Paul Ysart or known to have been made in Paul's own studio. The seller has included, in the listing details, a comment received which seems very reasonable to me and mentions two books to check with.

Other books with relevant information are Bob Hall's Scottish Paperweights and John Simmonds' Paperweights From Great Britain 1930-2000.

Hi All

I believe this to be by Willie. I had the exact weight a couple of years ago and it had a WM cane.

Willie made many Salamandas of differing colours. I have an unencased version in my "Magic Box".

Paul made only a few and they do not look anything like these Willie weights.

Regards

Roy

hi Roy

i think you better rephrase  " they do not look anything like these Willie weights" i thought only JD made them.... even though i think for a damaged weight £151 at the moment is a bit to high in my eye's

Hi Ray

I must admit I have never seen a Willie weight made by John or anyone else for that matter.!!

I agree about the price though, much too high for so much damage.

The John Simmons book has a lot of info on this weight and incidently I think the weight in Pats book was mine.

Ray, could you please confirm, with references, the info that you have given, especially "JD at Caithness".

Willie Manson made various types of lizard weights during his "Scotia period" as evidenced by catalogue details, let alone actual weights with "WM" canes, "Thistle" canes or "Scotia" labels.

As one who does not like to comment too much on currently live eBay auctions, I'll leave it there for now. ;D

Hi all

Despite the fairly extensive damage this weight is now at £491 - still with 2 1/2 hours to go!

I agree that on the face of it the lizard and other lampwork look remarkably like the
Magouillat lizard weight from Willie Mansons Kilwinnin period as shown in the Simmonds and
Flemming/Pommerencke books.

However one concern is that there is no mention of a signature cane and as far as I know
all Willie's weights from the Killwinnin studio , other than the Scotia range, were signed with
the WM cane.

I have checked the lizard weights at the 1992 Ysart exhibition and as

Best regards
