Green Uranium glass bowl
« on: December 05, 2005, 03:48:01 PM »
While out walking this afternoon I spotted a new charity shop which has sprung up in a vacant premises, so of course I had to investigate!

There I found this bowl, and it called to me because it's green    (That is green, Max & Peter, not pink, green!   ) and I thought it looked quite festive, what with the leaves and berries round it. http://tinypic.com/i6fdkj.jpg

Imagine my surprise when, having got it home and washed, I just casually tried my UV torch on it, 'cos, hey, it is green!   , and discovered it's Uranium glass!    :D

So; does anybody recognise the pattern?  http://tinypic.com/i6fdog.jpg

Leni, I really am enamoured with your lovely bowl - but I am afraid that I am not certain who might have made it. It's one of those patterns that makes me say "it's familiar, and yet......".

The pattern concept reminds me of several similar designs by Cristalerias Piccardo (Argentina). They made a few patterns that have a ribbed (thin panel) design punctuated by an encircling band featuring berry and leaf motifs. I don't think your bowl is from Argentina, though (more likely from mainland Europe). There's no doubt that some of their designs were heavily influenced by European glass that was exported to South America.

I have a delightful, press moulded, amber vase that has a pattern band featuring what appear to be oak leaves and acorns. I also have a mystery, columnar vase with an encircling rose pattern band. I've not been able to discover the makers of either of these items (yet) - though again I feel they are from mainland Europe.

Anyhow, that was a long-winded way of saying - nice piece but I don't have a clue who the maker is. I do hope someone can answer this mystery. I shall probably kick myself when we know the manufacturer.  :?  I keep thinking Bernsdorf or Walther, and yet....
