Gulvasesque, not, but what? Again.
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:31:09 PM »
Hi, know this one's been done to death, but when I've followed the threads, most of the pictures have gone now, :mus:  Obviously this pair arent, Gulvases but still interested to know what.  Not brand new I don' think, judging by dust and dead moths within but that doesn't take too long to accumulate. Quite nice anyway I think apart from the blobby bit on the rim of the smaller one.  Let me have it, I can take it on the chin!

Italian (judging by the colour) from the mid-late 1970s. I don't suppose they really fall under the category of 'copy' as the rims are significantly different from the Kastrup / Holmegaard Gulvvaser - but definitely 'inspired by'. Some of the ones that came from Italy, c.1980, were exact matches in all but colour.

Many thanks NIc, knew I could rely on you, may be posting some more Scandiesque vases in the next few days if you can bear with me, very interested in learning more about this glass and not ripping people off, cheers, Gill

Glad you mentioned this.  I am a novice and wanted to buy gulvases but comepletely put off as there seem to be so many copies out there.
Can one of the experts please give some guidance on what a gulvase base should look like ?  Should it have a polished pontil ?
And can anyone offer any other advice in sorting the sheep from the goats ?
many thanks

The bases should just be moulded - no pontil mark. But this isn't a guarantee, as all of the copies I've seen are identically-finished.

A lot of the differences can be fairly minor, with differences in base thickness and/or shape, or slightly 'off' colours, so the best bet is to just buy labelled examples from reputable sellers until you get a feel for the quality, weight, colour and shape - after handling a few you can spot the dodgy ones a mile off.

These are all of the catalogued colours, with an uncatalogued cased 'Olive Green' vase, and I'm missing an equally uncatalogued lilac-cased vase, of which a few examples are known by Kastrup:

thank you for the link - have just put my mind at ease over a vase I sold a while ago.  I was sure it wasnt a gulvvase as the colour just didnt seem right, but the person who bought it from me (at car boot sale) almost insisted it was, once he'd bought it cheap.  Looking at you website I can confirm it was NOT  ;D

The website is looking fabulous BTW!
