unusual Uranium decanter
« on: October 30, 2009, 07:44:22 PM »
a rather tragic reminder from the 2008 bs season.  They were a pair, and sadly I missed them first time round, and apparently the vender dropped one (this one) and then sold the good one.   This one was cracked after dropping, and has one or two other minor defects, but apart from the missing stopper remains in one piece.  I can't see anything similar in Barrie Skelcher, and I'm no expert of U., so am hoping someone might have an idea of attribution  -  and absolutely not a clue whether English or Continental.   Height is 31 cms. x  about 12 cms. at the widest.   Wear on the base is indicative certainly of being pre second war, and I venture to suggest maybe much older.   Not a cheapy product either I don't think....below the collar there are two bands of step cutting, and the collar itself appears to be faceted.   Am I right in saying the sides (and base) are 'reeded'?  I am unable to find a 'decanter type' No. on or around the neck, but judging by the feel of the inside of the neck, my opinion is that there was originally a stopper.  If the person who bought the other one reads this, I am more than willing to buy back theirs and re-unite the two .  Goes without saying that it reacts well under the torch.   Wud welcome any thoughts, and thanks for looking.  Paul S.

Lovely item. Strikes me that it might be Moser. Cut uranium doesn't seem that common and that slightly toned down uranium yellow could be what they called Radion. It's not just a pure uranium colorant.

thanks for looking.  Just imagine how good the pair wud look together, and agree that cut U. is certainly uncommon.  Regret I don't have any books specifically about Moser.  The other one is lurking somewhere, I think, in East Sussex  -  and I have this feeling that their origin may remain a mystery.   As for the 'toned down yellow', this may be due to my choice of lighting!  However, you cud of course be right about Radion.   thanks again.   Paul S.
