Any ideas on this old cut engraved glass lamp?
« on: April 06, 2009, 12:36:49 AM »
Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to view this old large table lamp (38" to the top of the finial and 22 1/2" to the top of the glass which I found at an estate sale.  Carved into the outside of the glass is a very large flower and another flower carved on the base. It has bubbles within the glass which I tried to capture in picture 3.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thank you again for this wonderful website!

Thank you for the question. I live in Medford, OR, part of the Rogue River Valley. This is a huge retirement area, people moving here from all over the country. Medford is about 40 miles from the California border.  Plus it is 8 miles from the 1st goldmining town in Oregon; Jacksonville, which was founded in the early 1850's. So, I have found many interesting things here.

This is such a beautiful lamp; the carving is quite deeply cut. I found it at an estate sale of an antique dealer who was downsizing due to divorce. She had it in her personal belongings.

Thanks,
Mary Anne

Hi Mary Anne,
i believe the term for this deep cutting is Intaglio,
if you use the search facility on here, you will find a lot of references to the term. (try google as well)
Moser did this type of cutting, but a number of American companies were very good.
Its a super lamp, i would think more likely American. Hopefully you may get some more suggestions
from others. I expect date is 20s 30s 40s ?
( I know theres some Moser experts on the board, also US Crystal fans)

Good luck,
Andy

Thank you very much. I definitely will check on Intaglio, Moser  etc. I agree with the age you have given. The only thing I could find at the library, as they did not have good lamp books was a shape of oil lamps called 'free blown font' as the tops of the lamps were similar. That is the closest I came, so not far all... So, I very much appreciate your leads! I'll keep searching and if anyone else has any input, I would greatly appreciate it.
