It is working Michelle; it must be your browser defaulting. Are you just clicking on the link?

Three little tricks that may help - I have had to use all three from time to time:

1.   Rub a pencil lightly across the signature area.  The rough surface willl be darkened and the signature will stand out being lighter

2.   Gently rub talc across the signature so the grooves fill with it then carefully clean off the talc from the flat surface - hopefully you have a white signature on a dark back ground.

3.   Try taking a picture of the signature so that light is reflected off the flat base.  The signatire will then appear darker because it absorbs the light.

Hope that one of these is of use in getting a good photo.

I do not know the origin of the plate discussed here, but I am pretty sure that piece at my picture is designed by Jirina Zertova and made in Skrdlovice.
The picture si from permanent Skrdlovice exhibition in Horacka galerie in Nove Mesto na Morave see:
http://www.cs-sklo.cz/ceskoslovenskesklo/25-STARE-CLANKY-OLD-ARTICLES/1027-Horacka-Galerie

it is labled at stool and moreover we have discussed this piece with Frantisek Vizner.

With respect to Jindrich, I’m pretty sure Michelle's piece isn't a Zertova bowl, or even one influenced by her. As others have said, this is a very typical Murano design. Fratelli Toso, in particular, did many bowls and ashtrays with the folded over section and the roll into a tight little shell at the end of the fold. The use of the foil is typical of Murano at that time. This one is unusual for the having the foil round the circumference of the bowl and the charcoal colour in the centre. I don't think the signature will lead to the maker.

Here’s an ashtray with the shell effect.

I'd start by looking at Fratelli Toso and then AVeM.

I suppose you are true David. I only pointed to the funny design issue - in Zertova piece happened accidentaly not intentionaly.
How it was in Murano or whatelse I do not know.

????

Just a couple of suggestion here to ponder on.

Could it be a Name.....then the word underneath be Kaiser ?  Is there a Place called kaiser??  If it is that word, could it stand for something -- a Glass works maybe ????

I think it looks like something like this:

??? Lucas  Paslowe ????
??? kaiser ???

(or something like that)  then underneath the Signature -- It looks like Kaiser....but that is just a GUESS !!  :ho: :thud:

ahremck Ive tried all three methods best on is the  talc one (pictures in previous reply http://i77.servimg.com/u/f77/14/37/17/66/100_8327.jpg
http://i77.servimg.com/u/f77/14/37/17/66/100_8328.jpg).
The pencil way you cant see a thing and the photographing ive tried ever concivable light and angle and still not picking it up well. The base is not flat or smooth so the light does not reflect neither does the signiture unfortunitly.
Langhaugh when you say "I don't think the signature will lead to the maker." do you think the signiture is a later addition, possibly by the previous owners? or just that its so impossible to read
Antiquerose123, everytime i look at that signiture i see something different and the power of suggestion is a wonderful thing as all i can see now is
Lucas Paslowe kaiser  :chky: whereas before i thought i could see Jirina Zertova if i stare at it anylonger i will probably be able to see antiquerose123 :D
cheers
michelle
