Ewer in Murano Style with Germanic Signature
« on: May 24, 2009, 01:34:35 PM »
I thought this lovely blue and white stripe ewer was a dead ringer for Murano, perhaps even something good like Barovier or Venini, but on the underside in stylized acid etched script (too faint and small to photograph) is a name that appears to be -- and I'm sure I'm reading it incorrectly -- "Peschelein."  Whatever it is, I love it.  Any help in identifying maker, designer and vintage would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Charles.

I think that's Pasabahce glass from Turkey.   :)

I've got a piece somewhere with an impressed (I think, can't remember) signature somewhere.

Max - your knowledge is so impressive!  I would not have guessed that letter combination in a thousand years, but in re-inspecting the signature after your post, you are absolutely correct. Pasabahce it is, for better or worse!  ;)  Of course, this only begs more questions, such as approximate dates of production (info. in Ivo's book indicates they've been in business from 1935 to the present), name of series (if any), designer, scarcity, etc.  It amazes me how wrong I can be about a piece of glass despite years of studying and collecting!  I'm also impressed that Turkish artisans are/were creating art glass of this quality, although maybe it's ethnocentric of me to say so.  Turkey is, after all, part of Europe.  In some quarters at least.

Answering my own question, I believe my piece may be current production as part of the "Çesm-i Bülbül Collection."  An example, a stoppered wine bottle, is offered for sale for $329 on this website.

For posterity in case the above link ever dies, here is the description:

Çesm-i Bülbül Collection Color twist glass became known as nightingale's eye in Turkish, since the swiveling designs were thought to resemble the eyes of that bird. These designs are created by means of regularly space rods of colored glass inserted into the molten crystal, which is then twisted, a process demanding a high degree of experience and skill. In the past, vases, bowls, candy dishes, rosewater sprinklers, tulip vases and similar forms were produced in color twist glass. Today color twist glassware specially produced for Pasabahçe Glass is made entirely by hand, using blowing and other techniques.

Good grief!  That's a lot of money Charles!  ....maybe I'd better fish my piece out of the shed and sell it!    :o
