Large, green and amber vase with raised pattern
« on: July 09, 2009, 06:43:50 AM »
I bought this vase some time ago in the hope that it might be Czech. Since then I've not seen anything Czech that resembles it. It's heavy, 1.89 kg or 4lbs 2 oz, a shade over 8 1/2 inches tall and 5 3/4" at its widest point. The bottom is polished and has some wear on it (the label is mine). I thought it might have been made in a wire mould, like the the Pavel Hlava vases for Bor. Where the raised patterns cross in some cases, a little bridge has been formed, with a gap between the raised part and the main body of the vase. I'm revisiting it now because I came across a very similar vase on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260435432458&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm38%26_nkw%3D260435432458%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

The colours and the technique are the same, and like this vase, my one was bought from Australia. Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

David

Sorry I can't help David but I can see your point about the similarity to the Hlava vases.

I think the ebay vase towards the bottom where it goes clear resembles the base of the Hlava vase like this one I attach a photo of.

I agree these vases seem difficult to place and may have to be an enduring mystery. They certainly look European though, I do not know if a GMB member like Ivo with his wide knowledge and exp. may agree with that or if the pictures don't allow him to form a judgement (or not). Please chip in Ivo if you have a view!

They look good quality vintage blown and nicely finished I can understand your frustration David! It is good to have an attribution. I would definitely guess European, other GMB members have commented on Australia like Canada as having imported a lot of European glass.

yours,

bOBA
