Vase with Spirals - Black and Red topped
« on: August 04, 2009, 03:55:16 AM »
I bought this a few weeks ago and would love your opinion on what it is. It is 185mm (7 1/2") high and 150mm (6") wide and it weighs 1080g or 2lb 6oz.

There is a mark on the internal part of the glass that I thought might be an internal chip but it appears on closer inspection to be an imperfection in the moulding. I have tried to show it in the close up photo.

It appears to look a bit like Fratelli Toso but I have seen nothing like this in my searches just some spiral pieces.

Hoping you can throw some light on this piece.

regards to all.

Clean and Crisp a Murano twist.

Thanks for the ideas. The base of this does show some age and the ground pontil suggests it has been worth that effort. There again it could be my first (but not last) stuff up.

The red collar seems to be a separate piece that has been hot attached to the base.

I do hope that you can id it as I like it a LOT!

Ardy:

This looks quite sophisticated to me. The spirals are well done, the bottom is nicely and neatly finished, and, the clincher for me, it does look like the top red has been applied separately. That process is called incalmo and is not an easy one, from what I've read. I can't suggest any possible makers; it could be Murano, though it looks later, and I think that there are few current studio glass makers who could make it, which again would make it later.  On thinking it through, though, I can't imagine why a studio glass maker wouldn't sign it.  TxSilver has a great eye for Murano, I wonder what she thinks.

I trust your eye more with this one, David. It does appear to be incalmo, but there was something about the vase I could not fit into Murano. Maybe it is because it is so perfectly molded and so neatly executed. My guess would be is that if it is Murano, it is a more recent piece. I would say probably not Fratelli Toso, but I am reading to see if others might have an idea.

Hi, a nice, but contemporary piece. There is an "incalmo" between the red red part and the "spiral" part.
Shape and incalmo remind me a Venini piece called "Colletto", created around the '60s (more or less).
But it had no filigree or canes in spiral.
Davide Fuin made for me some smaller pieces with the same technical features (Incalmo and filigree), but his "touch" on the filigree is better than this (the canes are a little too thick). SO my suggestion would be for good master glassmaker, but not for a top master... Somebody as D'Este, for example...

Sincerely

Alex

A very nicely made contemporary incalmo piece, quite possibly by a studio maker and there is nothing to suggest that it originated in Italy. Just as likely to be American or British. I'm afraid I don't recognise the maker.

I can see why you thought it was similar, Christine, but technically the one in this thread is much more difficult to make competently! ;)
